How do companies interview people for System design round? Not every software engineer works with databases/distributed system. Lets assume an engineer is working as a Graphics engineer, game engine developer or something is completely unrelated to distributed systems. I haven't worked with sql or any data base since 2009. Applying to FAANG like facebook, amazon etc requires one critical system design round. I looked up multiple websites to understand fundamentals of system design. But its way too off from my day job. As an engineer I can understand and explain basics of how to build a Instagram, but It will be obvious that i have superficial knowledge. Can someone care to explain what design questions can a person from a background like game engine/graphics programming/game developer expect? #software #facebook #amazon #systemdesign
Are you applying specifically for a game-focused swe in these companies? Otherwise they don't ask game engine system design questions. They ask their own sys design questions, they don't care about your background in games.
Facebook has a lot of general software engineer positions. If you wanted senior role you’d have to pass the system design round. I assume that may be different if applying directly to Oculus but I don’t have experience there. Ex facebooker
