Loving my job at Google, but getting 5->6 promo is hard because it depends on so many other factors besides performance. Facebook is offering E6 - what should I do?
How many years of work ex you total?
Enough for 6 or more, but don't want to expose too much PII with exact number
Sure, because there are only a few people at Google with the same years of experience as you! :)
Isn't the comp quite higher for e6?
Comp is only one of the factors. I'm hoping Blind can shed more light on others.
I'd take the e6 if I were you... you'll regret it when 7 years later you are still stuck at L5. You can also try to boomerang back fo Google at L6 later on.
Put comp aside, does fb e6 provides a larger scope? If it does and this is what you looking for, i'd say go for it
Take the E6
Take the bold Move
Take e6. Come back to google in a year at L6.
Probably impossible to bump the level that way, but if OP has high ratings at G, they will try to match his comp on coming back. So going to FB for a year is definitely a win.
FB has long hours. If you are young (in 20s) come here. If you have family and kids, avoid it.
Does that apply to all teams?
Most infra teams for sure. I am sure there are teams with better WLB. On average, FB has younger crowds grinding more hours.
The engineering culture is quite different. So pick the one that matches what you are looking for.
Do it for career advancement.
It's not about the money, but about career advancement. Although I don't know if it works the same way in FB where the levels aren't public.
I didn't use to, honestly. But then so many times I saw people rejected for jobs on account of "low career trajectory". Like if you don't keep advancing, there's something wrong.
