How many of you really think you can really get a bump in pay if you switch employer.. The only restriction here is that whoever is your current employer you are not going to FAANMG
100%
You can get a decent bump moving between FAANGs or many other non-FAANG like unicorns, OCI, LinkedIn, etc.
I’m not 100% convinced, which combined with the fact that I’m happy where I’m at means I’m a very hard poach. That said, even though I didn’t like my prior job, I wasn’t going to leave it at a pay cut.
Are you asking those already at NAGFAM (FAANMG) if they could get a bump if they moved away? Probably, but it’s going to be lottery money, ie non-liquid stock
I definitely could, but my last move resulted in a TC drop. TC isn’t everything.
Unless you’ve got something else compelling you, your BATNA is just to keep your current job, so you can interview and just wait until a higher bidder with a sufficient bump comes along
THIS all day long
Yep. Went to a non FAANG from a FAANG and got a 50% pay bump. FAANG isn’t everything :-)
It's easier from Amazon when you are internally promoted since performing at next level usually means you can get 30-50% higher elsewhere (though majority stay in FAANG, some go elsewhere for paper money at higher TC). We underpay internal promos unless you can do a dive and save. Empirically, external hires at a given level are paid market rate or higher most of the time, so much harder for them to get meaningful TC bump by leaving.
Yep. Spot on
Is the question “Would you require a bump to move?” or “Could you easily get a bump by moving in the very near future?”
Well in my case I knew I was making less than my selected peers so I knew I could potentially make more. And then, even though there are all sorts of tech companies with different levels of financial capability, I hell bend on going to one that could make that happen for me. So yes I do believe it because of the reality I choose to create: I would only look at the info that tells me I'm under paid, I would only look at companies that give me more money. This is a very biased belief, and yet it produced the result I want. Between truth and result, I only cared about result.
Why would I switch for a pay cut? Every job change has been a minimum 20% pay increase.
I am not asking for a pay cut. The question is do you really think you can get a bump if you are moving to non FAANMG
And, my answer is that it isn’t a hypothetical, I’ve been doing it my entire career.
