Women, help me understand why this is inspirational
Master’s + 2.5yoe b/w BSE and MS. All offers in Bay Area. GSK (ML/AI @ South SF): 160/0/19 (12% target bonus=19) TC 179k Genentech (Informatics @ South SF): 162/24/23 TC 209k Apple ICT2 (Watch/Health SW @ Sunnyvale): 125/(115/4)/0 TC 154 **Update: HM went to bat for me and got approval for ICT3. New TC is: 145/(150/4)/14.5 = 197k + 50k signing. I feel I got lowballed on Apple. TC before going back to school for my MS was 168k in SF Bay Area. Should I ask for Apple ICT3? Can GSK match Genentech? How much is it team dependent? Meeting both GSK and Gene teams, GSK seems more equipped with ML expertise since Hal Barron and Kim Branson took Gene folks there. #offer #tech #datascience #machinelearning #biotech
If you’re a techie, non-tech (Pharma) may not be ready for you yet. It’s still a struggle due to MDs running the show. DM me to learn more
DM’ed. Do you still feel this way given GSK nabbed Hal Barron? (Who was at Genentech and Calico prior to GSK)
Make it a poll
Man didn’t expect Apple to be lower than pharma. How ever, I would still try to go in tech as promotion/pay will quickly rise based on blinds compare to pharma. Also, technology will be cutting edge compare to pharma.
Genentech, but honestly if you have the time companies like 10x genomics, benchling, grail, 23andMe etc are better for engineers in comp and work in general.
Can you elaborate on Genentech > GSK? I know GSK recently partnered with 23AndMe under Hal Barron, can you share any thoughts on the partnership and/or Hal’s overhaul of GSK R&D?
Oops, replied below.
Genentech has been magic in the past 30 years. All other pharma companies want to be like them, so they poached a bunch of their senior talent and ex talent. This includes Hal at GSK. The partnership is going pretty well but with all things big old pharma companies move slow. Its possible that GSK is successfully reinvented to become as dynamic as Genentech but at the present moment I don't think they are there yet. You may have more signal on what team is higher caliber, but looking at the company as a whole its genentech.
Thanks for this insight. Based on interviews it feels GSK has more ML focus and expertise in their new AI/ML org than the folks I spoke to at Genentech. This bias comes in part from that >1/2 of my interviewers at GSK followed Kim Branson as he left Genentech to build AI/ML @ GSK.
Yeah GSK is making big moves in the bay area. I hope it works out!
I had a offer with Apple before I joined Genentech. I have a bioinformatics background. Genentech offered me more than Apple. Easy choice. I have a feeling WLB is much better at Genentech than Apple. If you want to chase TC, then stick with FAANG. Get Apple on your resume and jump to Google or FB.
Which team are you on at Genentech?
Random question - why do so many people leave Genentech for AstraZeneca?
Sounds like GSK gave you a G7 offer. Get promoted to G6 and you'll get an additional 30k stock + 18% bonus target.
So do they hire at GSK Bay Area besides data science?
OP what did you end up choosing? Any updates?
I ended up with Apple 145/(150/4)/14.5 and 50k signing
I wouldn’t touch informatics at Genentech. Most are 10+ year managers that are stale.
Which team at Apple?
Health SW. Updating the post!
