IIT Bombay, in Mumbai, is one of India’s most prestigious higher education institutes. It’s one of the five original IIT engineering schools established in the 1950s and ’60s as the Indian government’s attempt to emulate the success of the United States’ Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Major expansions since 2008 have grown the system to 23 schools in total. The IITs are now among the world’s top schools. Many young Indians apply for the entrance exams every year. Very few get in. In 2022, the IITs accepted just 1.83% of applicants, a rate more selective than that of U.S. Ivy League universities. The struggle to get into an IIT is so dramatic, Netflix has a multi-season scripted show, Kota Factory, about the country’s many prep schools that have sprung up to help coach applicants to pass the entrance exams. https://restofworld.org/2023/iit-graduates-dominate-tech/
I failed IIT entrance test twice 🙃
Hence in Accenture. Fail once more and TCS would hire you without any interview.
So everyone at adobe is from IIT?
McDonald's Hamburger University is more selective than the Ivy League universities. Selectivity doesn't say much. https://www.businessinsider.in/McDonalds-Hamburger-University-can-be-harder-to-get-into-than-Harvard-and-is-even-cooler-than-youd-imagine/articleshow/49517893.cms < 1% selectivity. More selective than IITs.
I’m setting up a new school, @Lxlg35 academy, everyone feel free to apply, we’re even harder to get into (0% acceptance rate). Ultra prestigious.
Also, IITs admit 70% of the candidates on affirmative action basis. Whenever you meet an alum, ask him if he's from the general category or an affirmative action beneficiary
This is not well known outside India. People blindly think all IIT candidates are special!
that's pretty good - great for uplifting millions from poverty
Do the IITs get a lot of international applicants or are majority Indians? I am trying to gauge if IIT gets international attention like top schools in the world, eg MIT.
Practically none
They don't. Primarily due to there not being enough intake capacity even for Indians. And since they are govt funded institutions, they don't have enough autonomy to ignore that constraint. Although, through international cooperation agreement based student exchange programs and outreach programs, a non-negligible number of students from the developing and Frontier countries (especially African countries) do find their way into IITs... mostly for Masters or PhDs.
Why aren't the IITs rated higher in global university rankings. In addition to MIT, Harvard, Oxford and the usual suspects there are several highly ranked Chinese universities.
IITs don't put out as much research as these top universities from US, UK, and China. They are improving, and have a long way to go. IITs are famous because of their undergraduate programs. Students graduate and go to US and UK for MS and PhD.
IITs are a gateway to high paying jobs. They aren't a gateway to research How ppl go in IIT: their parents say study hard post high school graduation for 3yrs and then enjoy high salary This is literally the point of people trying to get into IIT
It’s more like UC system. Berkeley is amazing while the other UCs are okay.
Go Bears
Go Bears

Author and his random made up bullshit. His references are up his ass. 🍑
It's in the first paragraph under History on Wiki. Can find other links too. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Institutes_of_Technology
What do you want to achieve from this thread?
OP thinks this will get hin the leg in side the door. Stupid op who has no talent . Like someone pointed out bring the topic of reservations and see how iit will be just a place for pity.
OP is not Indian, as he mentioned somewhere in this thread.
Lol OP, it's pretty obvious from your writing that you are a desi. Get over your insecurities....you did go to one of those IITs after all.
The ones who don’t write IIT Bombay do that because: - They don’t want to show off - They don’t care as much as others do - They don’t think it’s required Additionally, when it is required people do write IIT Bombay or Delhi or whatever because they know it will matter, for example: - Applications to top universities for MS/PhD/MBA etc - Applications to super selective companies (management consulting, PE/VC, investment banking, etc) - Applications to startup accelerators (YC, Techstars, etc) or raising capital Source: I went to IIT. Must I add Bombay?
Ahh the never ending insecurities
