Just got an offer for a Sr. Engineer role at Capital One, but I thought the interview was ridiculously easy so I’m wondering who at Capital One can tell me some more about if Capital One’s engineering departments are good or if they’re not looked highly upon. Edit: Should be noted that this is a promotion, and the offer is for Richmond
Is this in SF? I had an offer too. I felt their SF office was not as important as their Richmond office. They also had layoffs few years ago. But overall it is a good company. I didn’t take it because of the base pay offered. They tried to bump it up with a sign on bonus still it wasn’t SF level pay
This offer is in their Richmond office
TC?
C1: ~$110k (salary + bonus) Target: ~$90k (salary + bonus) Thing is that I can counter offer with Target and probably get right around the C1 offer. The benefits packages for both are fairly similar (haven’t dug through everything yet, but so far fairly similar). I’m more concerned with how their engineering culture is / how good it is
Where are you located now, Richmond is cheap and a pretty cool city.
In Minneapolis right now, literally went to Virginia for the first time when I did the on-site for C1. C1 would pay for my entire relocation so no financial burden there
Depends. Both offers seem similar. The Midwest is relatively cheap to live in but you have really awful winters there but beautiful weather the rest of the year. If you can put up with the weather then stay in MN.
Isn't TC too low for Sr. Engineer?
Interesting that C1 interview was easy. Usually it is not. But their tech staff is good. What team is it? Also, while Richmond may be a cheaper city and a great city (I have lived there), C1 is the biggest employer. Your next move will be tough unless you are ready to move again. So think before you leap. Benefits are great at C1. 7.5% 401K
It’s the payments team, but I didn’t write any “real” code at all during the on-site interview which seemed odd, almost completely behavioral. But good to hear their engineering teams aren’t bad.
Don’t make the jump just because it’s a “promotion”. L4 is easy to break out of at Target, and $20k is nothing in the grand scheme of things - especially when accounting for CoL differences. Move if you like the company or want to live on the east coast.
Update: turns out during the interview and over LinkedIn, all the titles said senior engineer, but on paper it’s a senior *associate* engineer, so it’s not a promotion at all.
4 to 5 at TGT is pretty much a lock at 2 - 3 year mark unless your skills are not where they should be, or if you're in a shitty org. 5 gives a higher range up to like 130 base, but you should only expect to start at 100-105
What role are you in at Target now? L5?
L4
