New to Amazon. In my W4, I notice that I am unable to select 'Married and filing jointly'. Reason it says is - I am a Non-Resident Alien. It is asking me to select 'Married and filing separate'. I do not want more money to be withheld by amazon in every paycheck. I know that the actual filing at the end of the year with IRS (while filing for taxes) is the one that will be taken into consideration. Would the extra money withheld by amazon be refunded to me by the company? Or would it be refunded by the IRS after filing taxes? Also, the sign-on Bonus is divided and being given in every paycheck. Would it be taxed higher in every paycheck and would I be getting higher tax refund end of the year?

How many books do you usually read in a year?
Whatever your status will be on 31st dec 2023, that will decide your actual taxes for year 2023. If you are going to be in USA for more than 183 days this year itself, then by default you will become a resident alien. So, if you feel your situation is going to be this, better do not select Resident Alien in the form. Because once you choose Non Resident Alien, The form wont let you choose Married and filing jointly. You got to choose Single or filing separately. But regardless, if Amazon is withholding more from your paycheck, you will get your refund when you file tax returns next year for same. No one is going to take your money away. Not even Uncle Sam.
Thank you. I selected resident alien and was able to change to ‘married and filing jointly’. Both my spouse and I are on H1B.
