I am new to the corporate technology world and the levels. While I see most FAANG companies follow L3/E3/IC3 upward, while MS have a different leveling system. The question is what % of SWEs and equivalents are spread across these levels? One Quora post mentioned most people do not go past L5/E5 in their career either by choice or due to lack of opportunities. Is it true? If so why? #swe #career
Most companies actually don't follow the same level numbers. You can use levels.fyi to compare level bands and salary across company. And yes, it's true that most people don't go past senior. But keep in mind that this industry is still fairly new and figuring things out. Most software devs are young. The rampant promoting super green people up to senior and higher is weird, to say the least. Past senior, you're looking at more responsibility, tech leading, teaching, mentoring, even managing. Companies also want to avoid having too many > senior people, as it shifts pay and power balanced, can create infighting, and so much more. This could be a really big topic ...
Thanks for your answer. It makes sense. So roughly, what % people in a company are at senior level and higher?
