The surge in job cuts has left many visa holders scrambling to find work in order to stay in the U.S. Tech companies rely on temporary work visas to hire thousands of foreign nationals each year for specialized roles in areas like engineering, computing and biotechnology. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/12/02/tech-layoffs-leave-visa-holders-scrambling-for-jobs-to-remain-in-us.html
They didn’t do the needful.
Specialized roles? Most of them are just generic coders.
It's still hard to get a job in big tech. Thousands fail msft and amazon interviews. There is an incredibly wide range of talent in this industry ranging from people solving double cache dp problems to folks who can't code anagram detection in 30 minutes
"generic coding" is highly specialized in USA because Americans are allergic to STEM education and careers.
Visas are temp by definition. It's unfortunate people spend years on visa and for a particular subset it's more like decades. The immigration process is way too employer driven.
I completely agree it is a tragedy on a personal level. The supposed reason we need those visas is because there are not enough skilled SWEs in the US. 1. There are plenty of Americans who want these jobs but have a hard time getting in 2. Clearly when every company is laying off people in the thousands seems like we don’t need a huge influx of foreign talent. The industry needs to stop trying to run on enslaved H1Bs, pay market rates to American talent (clearly supply is outstripping demand if we need to bring in 100,000s of people), and make it possible for people to get into the industry (everyone wants to hire a Sr, no one wants Jrs)
This is 100% right. Yeah I guess it sucks for the visa holders, but I don't see a CNBC article taking about how sad it is for all the Americans who couldn't get good jobs because these visa holders took the jobs from them for a fraction of the pay. Or for the existing tech workers who's salaries are artificially deflated because these visa holders drag average wages down. So cry me a river somewhere else.
Weird how there's all this talk about how H1Bs are deflating market rates when software engineering salaries have been on a record high for quite a while now. And to the point where people in our industry cause whole communities to gentrify in only a few years.
They’re generic developers. What do the mean by specialized roles? Just because it’s on the DOL petition that it’s a special role doesn’t mean it really is. There are plenty of good opportunities in India.

Yall need to go, unfortunately. I need a job 🇺🇸 (I'm willing to marry non citizen for $80k)
This is bad for us workers as it gives employers incentive to lower pay
It's sad but they all know the risks associated.
So much empathy! If someone gets into a accident on the highway and ends up in the ICU, surely you'll say "it's sad but they all know the risks associated (of driving)"
