Tech losing its luster at elite colleges
Cousin just started his senior year at Harvard and getting ready for recruiting. I asked him if his classmates are gunning for big tech and he laughed. Tech has lost its luster and the best students are going for finance jobs at places like Citadel, Two Sigma, DE Shaw, Blackstone. More money, the work is more interesting, and greater social prestige & status.

Things will always shift back and forward. Don’t worry too much about it and keep doing your thing.
Agree with more money, definitely not more interesting work and please, get it of your head that there is no social status and prestige in ANY job as long as you are an employee. That comes with being a founder or CxO.

They probably just don't know what they're talking about. They're in college. Obviously all those companies are good but nothing fancy compared to the best quant companies. Most could get into those with just LC besides two sigma probably
So really they are just going back to finance. Tech and finance have vied for the smartest minds for the last 40 years. Tech had the mindshare since the financial crisis, but as that is less remembered by the younger generations, tech is the new evil corps and finance is looking better.
I find it funny when people associate prestige to being a rat in the rat race we know of. Let’s be honest — there’s money here but no prestige, no wlb, no fun. If you had $10M in bank, would you still do such a 9-5 job? Is this what makes you happy? If you are doing it because you have no other choice, it’s pity not prestige. Welcome to the race.
