Techie committed suicide at Union City BART

I was literally standing on the platform and waiting for the daly city train to arrive last friday morning at 9:26 AM. Suddenly train halted half way and BART officials immediately came over and announced that somebody attempted suicide and everyone was asked to leave. I got disturbed due to this incident and in my mind I was continuously thinking why did he do that. After few days, I was still googling around to identify who was he and why did he do that. After further digging got to know that he is a techie who works in SF for a startup and graduated from CMU in his past. But I am still wondering why did he took such a bold decision and what made him think like that. We won’t be able to bring him back but atleast we should identify the root cause and make sure such things won’t happen in future. Wanted to know your thoughts on how can we prevent this.

I am a fellow tartan and I'm sad to hear that people still do this stuff even after graduating 😞

Mental illness is not taken seriously by many people. We as society need to realize that just because there aren’t physical wounds or scars, doesn’t mean it’s not serious. Rest In Peace, I’m sure he was a great man.

Doesn’t matter if he was a great man or a total dirtbag. It’s still a tragedy whenever anyone decides stepping in front of a train is a better option than continuing to live, whatever the reason.

You don't need to have a mental illness to commit suicide

Microsoft Pined Jul 4, 2019

My opinion is that you can’t stop people from dying by suicide as there isn’t a cure for depression. We can always make moves toward being a society that promotes supportive communities, has more readily available emergency mental health care, and doesn’t stigmatize mental illness. You can start a foundation or donate to NAMI etc I had a friend who tried to get hospitalized for depression a few years ago and was turned away for lack of beds. He went straight to a bridge and jumped to his death. That bridge now has nets, since 2017, but it won’t stop everyone. We can keep putting up nets but our culture and mental health care system has to change too. I’m sorry you experienced that. It’s good you want to take action.

Depression has a solution- not perfect but medicines do help.

Adobe DaLobstah Jul 4, 2019

This is, sadly, true bhai-long...many people who have depression refuse to get treatment. For the ones that love them, that is the hardest...they refuse to get help, yet acknowledge they have a problem. It’s an infinite loop. 😔

Yea I agree with you - even if I don’t agree you were actually there. Because I was there and that was my train. And they weren’t telling anyone what happened just that people need to leave the station is now closed. It was pretty obvious what probably happened but BART officials I’m pretty sure would never announce that and have to wait for it to be announced through the news.

This is why we all should be kind to people around us. We don’t know what they’ve been through in their lives. Also thank you for being respectful to the guy who lost his life

I read about this incident online. So saddening. Suicides seem SO common using the BART/ Caltrain lines. I'm sorry you had to experience this, indeed, our deepest prayers for the poor guy and the family he leaves behind.
