I work for a big retailer. Iβm leaving for Amazon soon. Should I tell my boss my next destination? Or should I keep my next job a secret? What is the etiquette? Im not violating any NDA by leaving for Amazon.
But would there be any obligation to tell? All retailers are afraid of Amazon. Perhaps they would walk me out same day?
No one is obligated, but only idiots, neurotics and unqualified will keep it secret.
Seems odd. Plus they can get sued if they ruin your next job
There is no obligation to tell. People usually ask out of curiosity, but you can just respond politely with something general, like you are leaving for higher pay or a better opportunity.
You better go re-read your non-compete Amazon, you are in for a surprise.
read it, so what?
I left Macyβs IT for PayPal and told my old employer the name of the company I was going to. No big deal.
They are going to find out from your LinkedIn profile or anyone you still keep in touch with after you leave. I know of not one person who has left where we weren't aware either before or after the fact. It's only an issue if it conflicts with clauses in your contract.
It's safer to tell nothing about your new employer. It may seem paranoid but someone could try to sabotage your move.
If you are going to a bigger/better company telling your boss might help them be happy for you and ensure that they think you didn't leave because you don't like them/your current job, you just found one that is better.
No one will get any benefit if you share your destination.
