In non commercial cars - does Tesla has the best auto pilot system ? Tesla drivers - how much % of your driving you rely on auto pilot ? Any good alternatives to Tesla ?
Almost all my freeway miles - all 65K of it - has been with AP engaged . About 30-40% of urban divided roads . I never turn it on in residential streets .
Wow that’s impressive
Would you say you are attentive 50% of the time while you are on AP ?
I use auto pilot for 90% of my daily commute. Basically for the whole of freeway. It has been really good in my experience. I haven’t heard of a single event where the accident was because of Tesla fault. They surpassed 1 billion miles on auto pilot and there were 3 deaths. The national average is 12.5 deaths for the same distance.
If you are from Bay Area would you mind sharing your highways you use your AP on ?
CA-85 mostly. Have tried on few others. No issues so far
It’s good if you are in one lane with no off ramps for all eternity.
It is scary reading that people uses autopilot more than Tesla advertizes or government allows. It is scary to know I share the road with these people.
At least the driver says they don’t use it in the local streets. unlike many people who text and drive mostly on the local streets. I guess what I’m trying to say is no matter if we have autopilot or not, defensive driving is always worth it if you want to be safe.
I use it all the time on all freeways and most highways or expressways. Use it in heavy traffic as well, do not find it scary and trust it a lot. I am always attentive as I know it has it's limits
I worry i would get complacent and do something wrong.
That's definitely an issue, I have had 1 or 2 situations where it beeped early on which has made me aware that it can fail, hopefully I stay that way
Most of the questions about AP betray complete lack of familiarity with it . It’s really not something finicky and temperamental that’s out to kill you. It’s quite predictable in its ability and where it doesn’t really work. A good user will know when to use it, when to have hand on the wheel applying torque to guide the AP, and when just to turn it off. Pretty much all the major AP accidents demonstrate AP failure situations that those who use it regularly know well, and it’s not any more riskier than cruise control if you turn it on and are busy on your phone as you go rear-end a semi .
Autopilot is so dumb! Can't read speed signs on exits and i never trusted it during exits. It also cannot read traffic lights and stop signs.
AP1 responds to speed limit signs and displays it on my dash . It also restricts speed in areas where AP cannot do more than a max speed . It also reduces speed on ramps and accelerates again on the merge . Mobileye EyeQ3 hardware (aka AP1) has traffic light detection capability advertized, but it has never been enabled within Tesla’s implementation of AP, and is not a Tesla advertized feature . Stop sign detection is not supported, but AP will handle stopping behind a car in front, and starting again when it moves , quite well .
It is not about « what percentage of the time are you attentive », you’re supposed to be attentive all the time. However what really changes on the highway is the level of attestation. Autopilot will keep the car in the middle of the lane and it’ll keep a safe distance (adjustable) with the vehicle in front of you. Just this is relaxing enough to me :)
Many cars have this feature now. It is definitely not unique to Tesla but I think Tesla does it better
I feel Volvo is becoming a Tesla burning gas. Similar AP system and similar big screen console.

Do you really feel special in your Tesla?
I would not really trust Tesla autopilot after the accidents in news. They are using current owners as beta testers
Lol I agree. I do think all the early adapters of a technology are beta testers. Do we have any other alternative other than Tesla ?
