Politics in America is a tug of war between the people and special interests. You can't ignore either if you want to get elected and the result is a constant compromise between what the special interests want and what the people want. Is that bad? In China or Iran there is no such compromise: the special interests get the whole pie and if you don't like it you disappear, get beaten up, or sent to a "re-education" camp. Churchill's statement still sums it up perfectly: "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others."
