I genuinely feel Indian tech has come way too far. So much so that we don't appreciate how hard it really was a decade ago. You could now be in the IC ladder and still make top INR which previously required you to transition into management or masters + boomerang or other tacts. MTech is almost redundant from a job perspective apart from research and shaves off two years of your valuable work experience. As for MBA, well no. Although Indian standard of living has been rising, we still remain largely a LCol area. It now pays even better to get upskilled here in India. Suffice to say, we're on par with Aus/NZ (low opportunities), Europe( HCol ) or Canada (super high tax). FAANGs are here. Often with complete ownerships to India. Startups pay top notch for top tech. Recently saw Coinbase and Airbnb opening their offices here. We do complain about the lack of the likes of Netflix, Stripe but they'll be here too. I don't mean to start any debate on India vs US. To each their own. Nor do I want to put Indian engineers on a pedestal or downplay their US counterparts. I'm even aware that the WITCH culture and Tier-III colleges still have it hard. I just want to appreciate the quality of top tech jobs here and the people who worked hard to make it happen. Long way to go still. Thank you for reading this. TC 1.1 YoE 6 #tech #india
It was only 10 years ago when a 6 lpa salary after 6 yoe was considered legendary. The work used to be mostly db migrations for US banks. Times have truly changed. Today, India is a legit large market in itself, is churning devs but the wages are just going higher and higher every year. Societal problems and politics aside, kids today don't realize how far the country has come from abject poverty.
True. Thanks for sharing your point. Being grateful and continuously upskilling would do the trick
Uber you make 1.1cr after 6 YOE? Damn. Please give tips.
SDE3 at Uber can make that much, even at Google. So yeah, tip is to crack SDE3 Interviews
@huluholo how much do top people at Nutanix make at 6 YoE?
Stripe is already in Bangalore.
Oh I didn't realise. Times are changing fast. Thank you for letting me know Amazon
However, work wise it is still inferior to HQs. Most of the projects that get dumped onto the Indian teams are old and need KTLO. Very few greenfield projects that get started here. And that is true even for Google, Amazon etc. Most of the decisions happen in HQs, most of the PMs and the management sit in the HQs. We are still very far away from being seen as equals on that front.
Isn’t Microsoft teams dev entirely based out of India?
@huluholo Not entirely. Most of the mobile apps in Microsoft are largely based Outta India for Dev. But most of the desktop apps still are built Outta the US.
It’s nothing magical or extra hardwork or extra effort that has brought this progress. It meant to happen. Tech is only going to grow and grow. Unlike US, India didn’t have users of software products. US had computers in 90s and software development was done for applications running on those computers. Now with mobile devices, Indians are now users and therefore, there are product companies catering to Indian audience. And when it comes to hardwork, effort, intelligence, we Indians already had plenty of it.
I concur. I look at Indian salaries reported on Blind and they are close to Aus.
Oh is it? I had a P5 offer from Atlassian as well. I think they really provide great stocks. Had gotten a good amount.
Can you share the atlassian offer number and level? I am in the interview loop and some pointers can help me.
TC:60 LPA, ~4 YoE. Have complete ownership of some of the most critical cloud services. India shining. Live in a tier 2 city in lockdown, monthly food, rent, electricity, groceries come to 20k max. So cheap. I would probably be paid the same in Aus/NZ/Europe.
Google what’s your stack? And can you give your TC split?
@Google that's crazy savings. Awesome. I manage to save/invest roughly 3.5L per month but nowhere near the ratio of what you save.
Great. When I was an IC with 6 yoe, my tc was 7L. So glad to see your 1.1 TC. Congrats.
Paypal where you are now in terms of TC?
In the US. It is ~425k (mainly due to stock appreciation)
Wohhh OP. You TC is solid.
Thank you. Wbu?

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Wholesome post, OP! It's people like you who are building the engineering infrastructure that top tech in India wants :) P.S. I would love that UberEats code for some food right now :P
