https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-11-19/altman-sought-billions-for-ai-chip-venture-before-openai-ouster Altman was actively working to raise billions from some of the world’s largest investors for a new chip venture to reportedly rival NVDA's. The project - code-named Tigris - saw Altman traveling extensively to the Middle East, seeking tens of billions of dollars from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Mubadala Investment Company, SoftBank Group, and others for an AI-focused hardware device that he’s been developing in tandem with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Altman’s pitch was for a startup that would aim to build Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs - semiconductors that are designed to handle high volume specialized AI workloads. The goal is to provide lower-cost competition to market incumbent Nvidia and, according to people familiar, aid OpenAI by lowering the ongoing costs of running its own services like ChatGPT and Dall-E. Custom-designed chips like TPUs are seen as one day having the potential to outperform the AI accelerators made by Nvidia - which are coveted by artificial intelligence companies - but the timeline for development is long and complex.
Why would he get fired for designing chips?
Fired for keeping the board in the dark about a major strategic initiative especially one with major capital (read: potential board appointment) implications
B/c your messing with the big boys. This is a revolutionizing technology with a lot of money.
Good. He should've focused on the development of AI as the CEO of a nonprofit instead of getting greedy
Yeah, don't be greedy. Leave the being greedy to the other billionaires that are better at it. Silly peasant know thy place.
Do you even know what a nonprofit is?
Sorry, I’m not getting it, he was fired for trying to build ASICs ? C’mon now.
The story makes sense now. Sam Altman was not being transparent with the board about his new startup, preventing them from monitoring conflicts of interest
Another AI chip startup? Haven't they incinerated enough money?
You don’t raise billions to build a chip startup. That amount is for acquiring an existing one.
He is making a startup in hope OpenAI will buy it like a spin-in.
Making more sense now
Why do you need Jony Ive to design data center hw???
I guess people glorify something or someone without understanding what is it that someone actually do
They’re going to chatGPT Jony Ives’ brain so that all the clueless engineers using ChatGPT to write their UIs will now build them exactly like IOS, ie you will use it this way or GTFO.
