It's sensationalistic. She's a recruiter that was hired right before a hiring freeze and is complaining that there was no one left to hire before her contract ended. It's making it seem like all people at Meta are just doing nothing all day.

Recruiting is one of the place that has the most 10x-ers. One really good recruiter can recruit an insane number of people in a short time. Many of them struggle to place anyone though.
And being on the interview end of one of these coaster recruiters after a supposed phone screen is wild. Recent example: "So I see you had a big migration project at <Company>, can you walk me through your role there?" "I am very goal-oriented and like Bloomberg for financial." š
Ya, sheās an idiot for doing this. With that said, I can sympathize with the sentiment behind her post. If she is hired onto a team with nothing to do, then whose fault is that? Itās not hers. Once she starts there, and realizes after 4-5 months that there are no expectations for deliverables and no projects to work on (corresponding with a lack of job growth, stasis and job insecurity) what is she supposed to do? Itās not her fault that she finds herself in that position; itās the fault of her manager who hired her with nothing for her to do. If she says anything about it it makes her job even more vulnerable. The only answer is to leave, and she should have done that, but thatās not easy to do either, especially after a short tenure that looks bad to future employers. The fact is is that she wasnāt hired to work - she was hired to help build her managerās empire. Thatās the story all across tech. And thatās actually why these layoffs are necessary.
It is her fault too. If thereās no way to assess your performance then that should be a red flag and she should have realized this and that the gravy train would end soon.
@NVIDIA - so youāre saying that once she realized that there was no work for her to do (which again would probably take 4-5 months just to be sure), she should have acknowledged it, prepared her resume, started applying and leave? I donāt disagree. But she will be asked why she is leaving after less than a year in interviews, and people will listen to any response with skepticism. And, if sheās successful in leaving, she will have a tenure of less than a year on her resume. That doesnāt look good. And, given how prevalent this has been all across Silicon Valley, thereās a good chance that she gets into the same exact situation in her next role - at least 50/50 shot. Then sheās in the same place again, and then needs to leave again. Over-hiring because of misaligned incentives has been a ridiculous reality in silicon valley for the last decade, and itās often people like this woman who need to deal with the repercussions even though itās the fault of management, and there is no good answer if youāre an employee that finds yourself in this position.

Wow. I only make slightly more as a DATA SCIENTIST with a masters and pre-doctoral internship at top ten university with more than 5 YOE in tech industry. Why did i do that when I should have been a recruiter and got paid roughly the same with presumably less education to basically do nothing? Iām literally losing my hair due to stress for barely $220K. This sucks. Any DS or SWE thinking of switching to recruiting now? š
