Speaking as someone whose org was affected by recent layoffs - it’s a really confusing time morale wise. Repeated layoffs are showing that executives don’t care what rank and file Googlers think anymore, and it feels like the Google culture of the old days is disappearing forever. On the other hand, having the stock pop is almost a perverse incentive-most people are happy making more money, but do stock gains really have to come at a cost of layoffs?
Why are you surprised? The tactic of treating your staff like crap but keeping them on side because of stock incentives has been an Amazon tactic for years and it's worked for them, Google is just becoming Amazon.
This is what happens when you import an Indian h1b culture and hand it your tech industry. Everything is so toxic and political now with the expectations that everyone (even Americans) work as if you are here on a work visa and will be deported if you get fired.
