In the US, foreign adversaries cannot own broadcast media on tv. Social networks are basically the equivalent today. Therefore, foreign adversaries should not be allowed to own social media companies. Seems logical. What part am I missing, why are people upset about this ? Should foreign adversaries be allowed to own news stations in the US too?#tech #
Should rest of the world ,also ban Meta/Google/Twitter by that logic?
China already does.
Yeah I thought everyone knew China already blocks US tech companies https://www.businessinsider.com/major-us-tech-companies-blocked-from-operating-in-china-2019-5
They gotta re-evaluate that foreign adversary criteria. The Murdochs own Fox News and are causing more trouble than a children's app
And don't make this comment about some conservative vs liberal hogwash. If you want conservative content, there's better than Fox News
Unfortunately Murdoch has been American for the past 29 years and it’s totally ok if you’re an American!
No different than what Grindr had to do.
News channels owned by foreign adversaries can push their propaganda and “present” news through their anchors. Social media platforms on the other hand have millions and billions of users like you and me as the anchors. The news shared is by the people and not being propagated from the foreign adversaries. I may be wrong but how exactly are we saying they are the same ?
The argument is that the foreign adversaries get to decide which anchors you see even if those anchors don’t work for the company. Therefore choose the messaging you see
Even if they do (they might but in my experience they most certainly have not yet), the source of the news are still people like you and me. People join social media knowing that there will be a lot of misinformation. So its just not the same.
