I recently got an email from a recruiter for a data analyst position I had applied for. It’s a link to schedule a phone screen. 1) Can someone please tell me what should I expect? Is it just a conversation about background or are there any technical or behavioral questions asked ? 2) For data analyst interviews in general and specifically tiktok in this case, what is the interview process like ? Do I need to prepare for product metrics/analytics case studies? Any good resources? 3) Just generally anything helpful you can share ? Help me prepare? Will be internally grateful for any and all guidance. Yes I know Tiktok is 996 and everything but that is how desperate I am to find a job and Tiktok is one of the few companies hiring so I can’t blow this. PLEASE help. I am on a visa and losing my job soon. A job that has already put me on antidepressants, lead to suicidal ideation, insomnia, panic attacks and caused me to lose 10 lbs in the last few weeks. Please don’t mock me, I can’t handle it right now. #data #dataanalytics #datascience #interview #dataanalyst #tiktok TC: 150 soon to be 0 YOE : 3

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Hi, I'm so sorry you're going through this. Hopefully, this can help you prepare well for the interview: 1) Phone Screen with the HM is generally to get an understanding of your experience and your interests. Make sure you read your resume well and are able to explain projects on it in great detail if asked. Generally, keep a 1 to 2 min elevator pitch ready to explain what you've worked on so far. Read a little about TikTok's mission and also about the team. Align your answer with those expressing your interest. For rest of the technical interviews, practice SQL from leetcode, stratascratch, interview query or HackerRank. All are not necessary, practice TikTok tagged problems from each. Even leetcode is enough. Go through the Python pandas questions on leetcode as well. Read the cases from 'Ace the Data Science Interview' book. It also has helpful points about figuring out product metrics. For behavioral, go through Amazon's leadership principles and prepare 3 examples for each in STAR format. That's the most exhaustive list of behavioral questions. Just make sure you're aligning your answers with TikTok team/culture. Brush up basic concepts of stats. Also, please remember that they already know you are qualified, which is why you got the interview. Just believe in yourself, stay calm, and kill it. I hope you end up in a better place and get this job. (Although I have serious doubts about tiktok culture) Wish you all the very best!
Thank you for the detailed response 🙏🏼 I have been practicing SQL, but not confident about python at all. What level of python would they expect? and for stats, just theory? or would they want me to apply those concepts in python too ?
The structure and level of depth expected for each skill vary from team to team. Don't stress too much about Python. Go to w3schools Python Pandas tutorial and revise everything 2-3 times and practice 20-30 questions on leetcode using that. You'll be all set. You can do this in one day. If during the interview you feel like you're unable to solve a question in Python, just tell the interviewer your approach/query in sql. They just want to know if you can find your way through hazy problems even if you're stuck. For stats, I did not get asked too many questions. They were super basic and mostly related to what's a normal distribution, how does it affect mean median mode variance and standard deviation. Just go through a few articles online for basic stats, and you'll be fine.
