I recently got an offer from both companies for 2 separate positions, but both are something I've done and am capable of. Both pay the same, except Tiktok is in-person and General Motors is remote. Of course, General Motors is remote, so might be the better option, but I'm more interested in social media. However, General Motors' remote offer is tempting. Their sign-on bonuses, benefits, etc. are all similar after negotiation to meet each other's offers. Which would you pick?
Offers TC?
After much negotiation, its practically the same
And I say go with GM if the pay is the same. Much better WLB, you get the generous TeamGM bonuses, you get sick time in addition to PTO, you get 4 weeks of vacation (including Christmas week shutdown), you get an automatic 4% contribution to your 401K and the health insurance is cheap.
The only problem is, GM mentioned theres no vacation PTO for July or certain holidays?
@Internet Brands So to clarify, you get 3 weeks of vacation (all front-loaded January 1st). However, you are forced to use 1 of those 3 weeks for the July shutdown. On top of the 3 weeks, GM gives you holiday pay for the entire week that Christmas falls on. So in essence, you do get 4 weeks of time off. That's on top of the other holidays throughout the year they pay for (I think it's 11).
In what world does tik tok and gm pay the same? Are you apply for an executive position?
It's not a SWE position, if that helps with context
Bro thinks every job is swe
Go with GM because they're working on something of social benefit. TikTok is just a better social media drug dealer.
Can you elaborate on GM social benefit? I do agree Tiktok is a better social media drug dealer, but their office perks though...
@Internet Brands They're referring to EVs.
Remote is an additional benefit imo. If salary etc is same, GMs offer is higher. Think cost and time of commute, COL, eating out or additional prep for office, clothes, shoes...
GM is forcing RTO but if they give you remote offer letter and not "hybrid" you will be remote. So make clear of that. Also make sure of the team and work you will be doing. If the pay is same GM is a good place for WLB. Can't say much about TikTok. Most non SWE are very excited to work here because pay is somewhat good and most case better than SWE at GM for some reason
I'm pretty sure you will learn more from tiktok. Also you need to make sure that remote will be 100% true even after next year 3 day RTO enforcement.
If TC is same, I’d highly recommend GM
If you’re offer a remote job. You’ll definitely stay remote. I’ve got a few colleagues that joined GM as remote employees last year. Recently, they’re given an option if they want to relocate for hybrid with a relocation package or stay remote. Of course they chose remote. They’re not forced to relocate for RTO
How did you manage to score a remote offer from GM, when they're forcing everyone to RTO?
Thats a good question. My offer letter outlined a remote position and when I was interviewing/communicating with recruiter, they said it would be a remote position. Could be switched up on me after I get the position then, since they're forcing everyone to RTO like you mentioned, but the letter states its remote.
@Internet Brands I've heard stories of GM workers who were told their jobs were remote getting baited and switched after being hired on. What ended up happening is that HR would code them in the system as hybrid despite advertising the role as remote and providing an offer letter that says remote. So I would definitely tread carefully, and make sure they don't pull a fast one.
