Lack of diversity in engineering division at X
53 y.o., senior IC - lead/principal/staff. Current job after Meta kinda sucks ass (Staff SRE). I’ve always been a good/great dev (not a 10x-er tho), but every year it gets harder to keep up with you young pups. Trying to decide if coast at current job, bust my ass and LC to get back to a FAANG, or just say fuck it and get a part time job at Starbucks or teaching at a community college. Kids are almost done with college so I only have to support myself and spouse. TC 220k NW 3.8 mil in a LCOL area
I'm guessing you have high yoe, so even if you coast, you can still retain your job. However, 3.8mm in LCOL is more than enough to retire. If I were you, I'd think about what job you want to have instead of what job pays you money. You could be a Starbucks barista, but you may not get much enjoyment out of that. Maybe this means an entirely new career in a completely different field. What do you enjoy?
Life goes by really quick, Enjoy the rest of your life while you can. Even if you coast, the struggle of staying on top of the minimum to avoid getting PIPed is not worth the mental burden
Just coast for a couple years and then retire so you can fully enjoy your life
Someone younger with a family to support needs that job. You'd be doing a duty and helping to fix the saturation problem if you left.
OP don't let this be a reason why you leave
Wealth is a means to an end - enjoying a retirement. Decide what your retirement goals are, back calculate your wealth needs, then figure out your plan to get there. My suspicion is you’re close to that retirement figure. I’d coast and cash checks. It’s the highest optimization for getting paid and still enjoying life. Then if laid off decide if I want to down level and keep working or ride off into the sunset.
Why do you use the word “ass” so much? Sounds low class.
Most relatives I know at 60+ have continued working because life would not be fun for them if they stop.. so probably need to find the right place.. that lets them work with flexibility..they do spend 3-4 mths traveliing and work remotely.. with no pressure etc..
Have you thought about pivoting to management roles?
This ^^ your high yoe can actually benefit you and others.
Take a break and travel. See the world.
