After a contentious public hearing with hours of public comment, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on Thursday authorized Cruise and Waymo to begin offering paid rides to the public at all hours of the day and across San Francisco. The historic decision makes San Francisco the first city in the world to have two companies offering fully operational paid autonomous driving taxi services and put autonomous vehicles on the fast track towards widespread use in California. https://abc7news.com/robotaxis-san-francisco-waymo-cruise-cpuc-vote-autonomous-vehicles/13630202/ #av #autonomous #avcars #autonomouscars #robotaxi #cruise #waymo #uber #lyft #tech #sf
Don’t short Uber. It’s monopoly business rn. Rideshare business isn’t easy to run as it’s capital expensive and low profit margin business. Timing was in Uber’s favour. It got successful because of decade long QE (quantitative easing) therefore raising equity was cheaper and easy. Uber leadership team’s execution is also lazer focused and top tier. You won’t get another Uber especially in QT ( quantitative tightening) era. - Lyft has turned into a failed business just like Lime. On top of that, Lyft New CEO is a 🤡 . If you get a chance then listen to Lyft’s earning call. CEO is clueless and always gaslighting investors with his dumb ideas - SF != World
Concern with shorting lyft is they might get bought by cruise / waymo.
But in many cases, other states and geographies copy what California does with their policy. Plus, Cruise is already launching in states that have more tech-friendly and pro-business politicians like Austin, Miami, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston and Nashville.
What’s the difference in cost? I would always choose a human driver over no driver. I just don’t see a reason for something a human can do.
I think it's about 20% cheaper than an Uber. Cruise is $5 base fare, 90 cents per mile, 40 cents per minute, plus 1.5% SF city tax. https://www.theverge.com/2022/6/23/23180156/cruise-driverless-vehicle-charge-riders-san-francisco
Why? You don’t have to talk to your driver if it is a robot
Id short Tesla if I had to chose. Uber a solid runner up. Concern is it might take years for the general public to realize and holding options for that long is not great
Why would you short Uber? They have a multi-year deal with Waymo to have their autonomous cars available on their platform. If anything, it’s a win for Uber coz they can now pay their drivers even less.
Lol waymo letting Uber believe they aren’t in danger. Great move by waymo, they get exposure and fluid entry into the market. Uber gets… a few years of not having to pay a driver while waymo builds out equivalents of every technology Uber has. Blood in the water, and waymo is a shark
Jeez.. Meta, where.. did you take your economy class? Or if not, where did you take a class called: common sense
I don’t think I’d ever use an autonomous vehicle. Not necessarily because of the safety but because it probably drives like a grandma. I want a human who can get on the gas when necessary.
Lol it’s true, a key argument for their safety is that they go the speed limit. I’d never do that as a driver
Who do you think these companies partner with? They don't have their own ride hailing business.
…yes, they do
No they don’t.
Ask waymo to ride without accidents for a day in India in any metro traffic. If they succeed, I'll definitely believe you
America + Canada make up 59% of Uber revenue, Europe makes up 19%, Im sure not driving in India is more than enough TAM to tap into.
It's not about the market. I don't trust that self driving cars are good enough, and driving in India safely would prove that they are safe anywhere else in the world.
Already priced in.
Waymo will have issues scaling
Not cruise?
reason?

Should I move to Amazon?
It’s going to take a while for the average person to trust a fully autonomous taxi. I wouldn’t short ride hailing apps just yet…
The average person will trust it after they take one ride. And everyone wants to take a ride to post it on TikTok, at least in Phoenix.
Not as long as you think. If it’s more available and cheaper then the average person will not give a fuck
