Time to unionize tech workers?

All but those with nerves of steel or 1 year of emergency funds are going to eventually end up with ulcers from these yearly layoffs. This is the only industry that I know of where workers are willing to put up with the chance of being laid off once or twice a year. Sure, we get paid well in exchange, but I’d gladly give up 10% of my income in exchange for some stability. I don’t know how those of you on visas can deal with this madness.

unionized but constantly being betrayed for sure

No thanks

If software engineers can’t make a barebones Union then no one can.

It’s not a perfect solution, but can’t think of any other way to stop this. Even if I managed to avoid the reaper for the last few years, I’ve seen good teammates cut and the rest of us lose sleep or fall ill every time this comes around.

Google AYEp75 Jan 18, 2023

It doesn't need a solution. High reward comes with high risk. If you want that high TC you accept risks and layoff is one of them. If you're financially competent you're prepared and move on.

Microsoft Nottodæ OP Jan 18, 2023

Notice that I’m from M🥜. High TC doesn’t apply here. If I were at Google or Amazon then sure, high risk high reward. I guess mb for accepting a position here instead of LCing a few months longer to land Amazon or Google where at least the extra income can facilitate saving a nest egg. TC 180K

I’m down to trade 10% of my tc so I can do less and still be employed securely. Honestly at this point, I’m just working for health insurance. Already have everything I want, and not looking to grow my life anymore. Don’t want family, don’t want kids. Just want to do as little as possible and survive with good healthcare.

You’ll be trading at least half, most likely more.

DoorDash photai Jan 18, 2023

Like I said, at this point I’m just working for health insurance. If it means less stress, less hours, more stability I’m all for it. That way I can use the rest of my time to chill tf out without requiring mental gymnastics to unwind from bs at work.

If you can’t be bothered to have financial discipline thats on you.

Based on my humble opinion, it is not gonna work. People on visa are already f**ked enough by documents and regulation, people with family have a burden to bear. Union means risk getting retaliation and lose job (sure, others get benefit in long term, but the leaders or those dedicated get axed first because company wont tolerate lost) It works for lower wage labor because they have the number, and the pay is already low that it is the same everywhere. Never in history revolution started from middle class.

Amazon ilacata Jan 18, 2023

Always wondered how a union can make the job secure. Never really understood the concept

Amazon refail1357 Jan 18, 2023

So a bunch of people form a union, protected by government. They fight for employees rights, push back company at anything bad. Company cant fire them with reason related to union. Basically they protect you. Problem is, leaders or those related to union will make company losing money, so they will get fired one way or others. People with high income dont want to risk, so noone actually there to keep the union going, except for low pay job workers, where it may work, or not
