Tipping on DoorDash etc

It doesn’t make sense to me to that we need to tip gig workers of these multi billion dollar companies like DoorDash, Uber etc. I mean these companies hold millions and billions in cash unlike mom and pop restaurants. So it’s not the same as tipping your waitress at restaurants. Why should we the consumers subsidize labor for rich companies? What does Blind think? Tc:400k

I agree with your sentiment but still tip because it is the only way these ppl make a living wage. I would say if you are against tipping them you should not use the service. Ultimately the government should mandate that living wages not be dependent on tips IMO, but that is another convo.

Google swigatron OP Mar 26, 2022

So I disagree. If people don’t make living wage, they would stop working for these companies. So indirectly these companies are responsible for keeping their workers happy, but they are finding an indirect way to work for them precisely through this guilt tripping trick on consumers. If people stopped tipping, these companies would need to compensate them directly. Precisely what happens on DoorDash for no tip orders if IIRC

"if people don't make a living wage they would stop working for these companies" on what planet, my dude?

This is a good question. How is the service fees and margin on prices divided between company and gig workers, particularly for no tip orders. Any DoorDashers or ubereaties here to clarify?

Service fee goes to DoorDash. They do not make money off the food.

Damn just throw them 3 bucks you greedy fuck

Google swigatron OP Mar 26, 2022

Relax. It’s not greed if you don’t want to subsidize the rich. Daily workers know not to stick with a job that doesn’t pay. Just a matter of who pays.

Synopsys skkB55 Mar 26, 2022

Daily workers will stick to any job that pays and makes ends meet. That’s the definition of daily workers. Hell, with the current inflation, a daily worker may take 2 minimum wage jobs just to get by.

I don’t tip by order size but by distance. It’s ridonculous to tip drivers by order size unless you ordered enough food that it required both hands or multiple trips from the car. It’s also unbelievable you have to tip the driver and can’t tip the restaurant that actually made your food

Tipping in general is a joke and I hate it.

Google captainTC Mar 26, 2022

Well tipping in general makes no sense. Just bake the reasonable service cost into the price. America is one of the very few countries where service staff still doesn’t get a fair living wage.

Americans are occasionally touchy about tips. Earlier it used to be that tips were better as they weren’t taxed, but it evolved into a new sub culture where tipping was almost mandatory socially of not legally. This prompted services to show reduce costs, hire workers at lower costs , and guilt customers into tipping. Increasing price means lower demand for doordash, and higher expenses per order. They are never gonna do that.

Microsoft AlOverlord Mar 26, 2022

I don’t tip unless it’s a crazy distance. Service fee is already $5+ so they can pay the driver with that. Food places that had delivery before DoorDash used to charge 1-2$ if you’re in the same zip code, it’s insane that DD charges fees + item prices higher and a tip on top of it

Synopsys skkB55 Mar 26, 2022

The problem is most of the service fee goes to the company providing the service and not the driver. It’d be better if they were more transparent where the service fee went exactly but of course they’re not going to do that and hence you need to tip the driver. DD makes a killing from the restaurant, driver and those ordering.

@Synopsis that’s a company level problem. If you play along, the company is essentially guilt-tripping you into paying a share of what they should be paying. Temporarily feasible, but surely can’t be a norm.

NBCUniversal waitlist Mar 26, 2022

Agree in principle; but in practice if you don’t tip then your food gets delivered slower. Free market, baby!

Capital Group dujb6o Mar 26, 2022

You guys want your food and groceries and laundry delivered for free but you also want a 500k comp package from these app companies that run off gig work.

Twitter gnhiutcc Mar 26, 2022

This ^. Too many people just chasing the comp
