Tips negotiating Google L6
So have a Google L6 offer. Wanted to understand a few things 1. How does it compare to Amazon L7 2. How hard is it to move up from goog l6 to l7 3. Suggest some salary numbers I should target
In terms of scope and influence, Google staff is closer to Amazon senior in most cases. In terms of technical competency and TC, more like Amazon principal (L7). This is mostly because Google has a lot more L7/L8 ICs than Amazon does. Search Google for "Google ultimate comp thread Blind" to find ranges.
Truth. There are way more L6/7/8 at Google so the scope and influence is much lower than that of a principal at Amazon. But technical skills are the same.
This is accurate. It's possible to coast as l6 at g but there are so few principals at amzn you have to be visible to your org. About 20% of swe are 6+. Principals at amzn should be single digit percentage. Mostly from retention and attrition. Many 6 at g are people who have been around 10+ years
Ask for 500k as L6
Amazon L7 makes more than 500k. Top L7 can clear 700k+
Is that after stock inflation?
L7 can clear over a million with stock price increases. Target comp can go into the 700s (Bay Area) or 600s (Seattle).
From what I know Amazon L7 Devs are treated as Gods. No idea about Google l6
But why are these gods paid only peanuts.
Amazon L7 comp is competitive and you don't have to deal with lots of the bs lower levels do.
