I am not sure how to navigate this situation apart from just leaving Pinterest. My manager is very average and mediocre - nothing bad or toxic but also nothing great or outstanding about them. I know its rare to find amazing managers and I have had my fair share. What I don't like about my manager: 1. They don't seem to have a mind of their own. They just plug and play ideas they hear from one person/meeting and reuse them in another meeting. Not very strong technically but have strong skills on how to navigate leadership expectations and look good. But never an original thought. 2. They always weigh opinion of engineers based on their level. No matter what, opinion of L6 always outweighs opinion of L5 and opinion of L5 always outweighs the opinion of L4. Even if the senior engineer says inconsistent things at different times they'd still support the senior engineer and always expect junior engineer to blindly follow instructions. 3. I have been a top performer in past but now I am struggling to meet expectations because of the mediocrity I am stuck in. 4. Changing teams is out of the question because of the way process works. Even then I don't think there are too many amazing EMs around anymore that I would want to work with. Only my TC is keeping me here right now. 5. My manager does not care about long term vision of our product/team. They are hyper focused on OKRs and everything should align with OKRs. Even if it hurts the product long term, they want to look good short term. 6. They have created a culture of stress in the team. Even their pulse ratings showed high stress in the team. Deadlines and deliverables are all we talk about, not ideas and technical things. Even when we do talk about technical things I can tell with every single thing they say whose thought they are quoting because I also talk to these other senior engineers directly. I used to be ambitious and driven but now I have no hopes of a promo. Want to survive one year till my cliff ends then jump ship. Any tips welcome. Don't say talk to HR or talk to leadership, because this manager is not blatantly bad and won't ever be piped. But they are too mediocre for my taste that's all.
Seems you already got a plan to jump ship and got a good current TC . If you are really driven by cool ideas do something to open source or something to the planet while cliff ends and leave . Or just enjoy some personal time and take work with low passion to survive the mediocrity. Man I tell you , people are dealing with much more things at low TC
Jump immediately to another ship
For 5, why not point that out and convince them to also align OKRs with long term directions?
Tc?

Damn, I understand exactly what you mean. It sounds like they’re very good at manipulating the circumstances to make themselves look good. Do you have any option to mention what you laid out (super clearly by the way, incredible precision in detailing the issues) to your skip? Obviously maybe a bit dialed down, but to express that this is negatively impacting culture and your motivation? These are valid concerns and I feel if you have any management you know would take you seriously and trust you can at least get good advice. Hang in there bud.
