Tomorrow may be a tough day for some people. Suddenly, losing your job takes a mental toil on everyone, and gender, culture, etc. makes it even worse for some. I just want to say that there are people who care about you deeply, regardless of where you work. Moreover, after talking to many people, I have decided I personally won't reach out to anyone in regards to this. Even though layoffs often reflect bad decision making at the top, some people can't help but feel ashamed (even though they shouldn't be). I just don't want to add to that experience. However, please don't take that as I don't care or I am not here to help you. To all my friends, I am always just a text away. Please take care of yourself! Things I learned when I left: 1. Have as much cash buffer as possible - at least $15k. 2. It's ok to not invest in 401k once 100% match is received - choose liquidity vs tax optimization this year. 3. Look into government health insurance since COBRA is extremely expensive. 4. Unemployment benefits could significantly reduce cash burn - savings over pride (don't think of unemployment benefits any differently than health insurance). 5. Maximize all the employee benefits! 401k match, wellness/connectivity stipend, and the following: - Save all the discount codes from internal systems (e.g. Fond) and take a picture of your ID. A lot of places have employee discounts and often just need the discount code and copy of your work ID. - Buy a lot of discounted AMC tickets. - Copy Enterprise car rental code. - Sign up for Marriott, Delta, Clear, Equinox, Verizon, etc. using your work email. Make a list of all your team members so you can add them on LinkedIn. Enumeration is hard! 6. Copy your personal data from work devices. If you are allowed, you can also copy things you created which may be helpful for your next job (e.g project plan template). I know this may seem like a downfall right now, but so many people end up at better places with higher pay and happiness. Take a break and travel/spend time with family, if possible. Be kind to yourself - you got this! Extra love for new grads, people on visas, new parents, and others!
Damn, more layoffs!??
There’s always more when the economy is slowing.
This is just the start of the "soft landing".
Meta severance itself will be 50k plus - they are paying 6 months salary close to. May be way more thn 50k
It’s 4 months + 2 weeks for each year you’ve worked there
Damn, its hot. Assume recent fired people were M1 with at least 250k base and 2 year’s tenure -> turns out 104k ( plus leace encashment ) Getting laid off from meta is too prestigious 😊
Why do you want AMC tickets?
To watch movies
I know that, but in the context you are fired, it might be better to save money, and maybe watch movies cheaper with Streaming services or free in youtube.
Mk
What a thoughtful post!
I would add these - give yourself time to grieve - set a schedule for job search (making it a full-time thing is a recipe for stress and burnout) - keep up your other routines like exercise and socializing if you can - set achievable, small goals that will propel you towards your next gig, and celebrate the small wins (e.g. make 3 networking calls each week, etc.)
Good points but no one should grieve for a loss of job
@badname easier said than done. I thought the same until my first lay off 😅.
BIG BIG BIG REMINDER: make sure to use all perks, yes Marriot codes and rental code, download your pay stubs so u can edit for housing needs if your lease has to be renewed or you need to move to cheaper area. Comb thru every benefit and screenshot it, also go in and look at all your workplace posts that were bullshit and they will help you bullshit your next interview. Even steal some of your team members work, it’s brutal outside. Coming from a first round meta layoff
This is good advice right here
I’ve done that rental car code thing in the past… Worked for several years, then had one extremely awkward encounter with a nosy Enterprise employee in France who insisted on seeing my badge, or work email Not doing that again.
Moved my family to london to join meta, got laid off from meta... it sucks.
Wow I’m so sorry
