Analog semiconductor peeps (ADI, Maxim, TI...), gather around cause this thread is for us. What are realistic total comp targets in our industry as you get to higher levels? I am more curious about Director, GM / VP levels. I am far from this level (currently at E09 at ADI) but I want to get a sense of what is possible in this industry. The total comp numbers I see here from some SW people seems so ridiculously high and I'm not even sure if some of the senior people in our companies are there.... What are some realistic comp targets at Sr. Manager, Director, GM, VP levels? Or should I just accept reality and find a growing sector if I want to make enough to be able to live in silicon valley? Listen all you overpaid SWEs, before you make fun of us hardware people for being poor, don't forget that you only get to write your software because we make the hardware happen for you :) TC: 175k YOE: 5
Bro , 3.5 year exp and my TC is 105K !! Think you are far better than me
At 3.5 I was at 55k.
@papasmurf2 what’s your TC now? How did that progression go?
Is 175k standard for 5YOE in san fran for this industry?
Coming from an EE background, I loved analog circuits as a subject. Thankfully or not, I fared badly in exams and organically moved away from it. Now, I write code and make a tonne of money. Having done both, I can tell for sure that mastering Analog circuits requires both a higher depth and breadth of knowledge. But then you ask, why are analog engineers paid so less? Well because the world is not fair. Pay has nothing to do so with the difficulty of a job. It only depends on the demand and supply for that particular role and sometimes on how much money you make for the company.
This ☝️
I know VP of Global Semiconductor company with 25YOE is paid $750k TC
@broadcom for directory it wud be north of 800k. GM wud be in millions. GM reports direct to CEO.
I think analog is now moving more into vertically integrated businesses which do both hw and sw under the same roof. These companies pitch for good talent from pure hw companies and offer better pay because of their better business margins. Best example i see is apple. I think this dissagregation of hw and sw is a cyclical phenomenon, moving in and out every decade or so. I think its better to move to a larger product ownership than minutely limiting oneself to analog design. Yes, analog design takes time and effort, but doesn’t necessarily give more money.
Also as long as you keep working for someone else, you’ll continue to be paid peanuts. Learn, evolve and start something new.
19 yrs. VP/GM. 780K.
Only actual response so far.
Awesome!
Sr manager semi is around 150base, Director gets into 170 to 195, VP is a bit above around 210 but more heavy into stock and bonus. All typically will have 20% bonus on top of this that is easily paid out. Stock will be another typical value of 15k for product manager upwards to 50k as director. Once you are 3yrs and getting multiple years paid out in RSUs, for Dir and SrPMM should see 80k stock unless you are at a non high flying Semi with low comp. This is my experience. Don’t get me started about outside the bay. Outside the bay can be less work but much lower comp. Let’s be honest- going from semi HW and then SW and then combo etc- the reason why HW makes less is when you are selling just HW is it’s super intensive to plan, sink cost and then sell the product a year or sometimes 1.5-2yrs later. Even if you did your work, nobody sees the value you made into the market revenue for over a year. In SW you can show immediate value in a month. This is why SW makes more- constant cycle of showing value and proving worth. However the HW side trains due diligence since you cannot screw up the massive $m invested. Apply that to SW industries and you are a great combo.

How is 175 bad for 5 YoE? Also, negotiate. Semi stocks are laggards generally, especially Analog semi.
Tesla there is a worldwide semiconductor shortage particularly in automotive that’s shut down entire assembly lines. Semis have done great during COVID due to high demand. Semis also are sustainably profitable without need for $1.2B in government credits.
Lol, I’m not throwing shade but I worked for 7 years for a semiconductor company. Hence the comment on the stock price. I agree with the OPs comment that HW comp is low and reason for major SW comp is from stocks.
