Transition from M&A to product management

currently work in software M&A but hope to eventually transition to venture investing. Before that i want to work in a product management role for a large software copmany to develop operating skills and have a better uderstanding of whats going on inside a company. Any advice as to what types of things i should focus on educating myself about in order to make the transition?

I am planning to do opposite. Currently in an Application Architect role but want to get into Corporate Dev/Venture Capital.

Just curious as not getting why M&A to Venture Investing has to go through Product Mgmt? It don’t, even if intent is merely to get hang of what is going on in company. That will be offsetting instead. In big companies, Product Mgmt is lot much marginalized and confined a lot. You won’t get some sort of what’s going on view or say a bird eye view.

The majority of venture funds that I’m interested in place a lot of emphasis on hiring investors with experience operating. I come from an entrepreneurial background and was already interested in learning about product management but combined with the value I could see from a software investing standpoint I see no reason not to put in 2-3 years to develop a new set of skills.

That is fair argument but you will not learn much in depth in big companies specific to Product Management. You will have to target mid-size companies.
