I’m a manager working for an apparel company kind of in IT. I say kind of because I am not technically IT, but my job has become 25% TPM, 25% implementation, 10% coder, 20% data analyst, 20% product manager. However, I work entirely with people who are not technical in the slighest. I need to get out. It’s awful and I’m desperate. But I feel like my resume, as a result, is all over the place. I know my next job needs to be in tech, but where in tech is proving difficult for me to work out. Any thoughts on transitioning out of ecomm/fashion and into tech? Is that going to look like a huge jump to a hiring manager? What technical skills might I be lacking?
I don't think it's a huge jump to go into tech consulting at a big 4 or other consulting firm that isn't FAANG/Microsoft. Most tech consulting roles that aren't implementation or at real tech companies are very soft-skills driven and you would probably be a good fit. If you want more software engineering I'd recommend a bootcamp cuz firms like Deloitte will try and keep you in management since you already have management exp
Sounds like you’re giving 5% too much to the company.
😳 fine I’ll update the math 🙄
You sound like you have a great start for a project manager role. Associate project manager with a little bit of tech is good. Everything you listed is an aspect a good pm would be familiar with. check out the PMI and talk to some project mangers to figure out if it’s a role for you. Also note that you can be a pm in non tech companies and still manage tech (the adage that every company today is a tech company, is true).
This is true, I have considered the possibility that I may not need to work for a tech company. However I do feel like I’ve been burned a little by the company I’m with now. You would probably be shocked at just how resistant upper management is to implementing any modern tech solutions in 2019. It’s amazing that we still function. I don’t want to be in this position again so my next move does have to be somewhat strategic.
You sound smart and biased towards action. What do you think you should do?
