I've been using my vacation time to do some solo traveling the past few years and while it was fun at first, I am getting bored. Every country has some famous monastery/church/cathedral and after seeing a few of them, they all blend together and none of them is as nice as notre dame (saw it before it burned). Same can be said for castles and palaces. Once you've seen a few, you've seen them all. I enjoyed seeing remnants of once great civilizations, but now Stonehenge seems lame when compared to the Colosseum, Pompei, or Machu Picchu. I've also noticed that these landmarks are mostly visited by old people and families. The few times I see young people they are less concerned with the historical significance of the monument and more concered about their butt looking good in the instagram photo. Talking to young folks in the various hostels Ive stayed in, it seems they actually spend most of their day drinking and only briefly visit the landmarks. Why travel to another country just to day drink in some random park? Is this what travel is? Boring museums. Monotone audio guides about adulterous kings that lived 800 years ago. Gift shops selling overpriced shot glasses. Instagram whores glamorizing their travels, when really they just sat in the park day drinking. Buses full of chinese tourists who somehow take more photos than the instagram addicts. etc. I think I need something more exciting... EDIT: Food was awesome in Paris, but you still need something to do between meals. And only a few countries have really awesome food. Fish and chips in London is really not that amazing. Some have suggested I go to remote areas off the beaten path and interact with locals, but those are the areas with the least amount of english penetration. How do you manage this when you do not speak the local language? I think the reason that Im getting bored is that "seeing" things is too passive and I have already "seen" plenty of things. I think I need to figure out a way to make travel more interactive so its more about "doing" and less about "seeing"
May be try backpacking. It might interest you
Yeah I feel mountains never get boring for me
How did you miss the one of the most exciting part “local food” out of all this travel? 🤷🏻♂️
This. It's one thing that truly cannot be accurate exported. Also local culture. Find ways to immerse in local culture.
Yep it’s not just the landmarks when you visit a place. It’s the food, difference in culture and the native people - how different they are but yet the same that intrigues me
I've been traveling solo since I was 16 and I never bothered to visit landmarks and all the stupid tourist stuff. If your idea of a holiday is going to the "Top 5 places to visit'" on TripAdvisor or something, then you need to be more imaginative, you're going to have a boring time. Also, don't take a camera.
You totally don’t know what to do during traveling ..
Solo traveling... no wonder..
Total opposite. Alone is where the miracles happen.
You need to switch up your purpose. Your purpose has been history and it’s boring now. Try culture, nature, food, hobbies, etc. Also I don’t care for solo traveling, or traveling in big groups. 1-2 close friends is the sweet spot.
I’ve done group travel and solo travel and it’s all excellent. Some people just have a pure passion for travel and taking in new sights and cultures and I’m one of them. Traveling solo is a great way to meet interesting people across the globe because honestly it’s mainly in America where there’s a stigma to solo travel. When I lived in Europe, it was very normal and most of the solo travelers I’ve met on my excursions have been from Europe. Traveling is my only financial splurge besides investments and I love it.
What do you mean by "culture"? What is an example of traveling for culture?
Enjoying travel needs historical context. So, read the agony and the ecstasy before seeing Michelangelo's works. Or mad enchantment before a trip to the musee d'orsay.
Mix it up in your travels with different types of destinations. Go off the beaten tracks. Stay away from where Instagram models attract the drooling crowds. History, nature, adventure, high density population, extremely low population, etc. I'm a travel buff. Most people do it for Facebook photos. I like the tip above of not taking your camera. Mingle with locals after thorough research. I hate traveling alone, but if it came to that, I will make friends along the way.
I’ve been going to and from Mars for years and highly recommend it.
Ziplining to Mars?
No, jetting.
