Tuition Payback

Hello Blind, I m working at Northrop Grumman. I just finished my masters from John Hopkins University in Computer Science and they paid for me to go there. When Northrop pays for ur education, you are required to stay with them for 2 years, else you have to pay them back. The amount I will have to pay them back would be around 23-30k. So, some question Is it a good decision to leave Northrop or should I stick for 2 years? If I were to jump, I could make around 150 . Already have an offer from #Raytheon and #Lockheed. Do they really make you pay back? Like how do they calculate exactly how much I pay them ? Yoe 5+ Current TC 119 after being promoted to principal Software Masters Los Angeles #defense

I would. Raytheon typically gives you 20-30k sign on bonus too so you can use it to pay back. Also you can redo your taxes and get some additional tax deduction to take advantage since you now paid for it out of your own pocket.

Lockheed Base 152 k 4-8% yearly bonus Raytheon Base 147 k 4-8% yearly bonus 33k Sign On

I think current TC is $119k. So it’s a big bump with the sign-on.

If you have to pay then put this clause with Raytheon/Lockheed saying you are bound and if you leave you need to pay this much and see if they can help with it.

Lockheed isn't willing to pay, but Raytheon is willing to pay upto 33k

I went through this - I left owing Northrop 24k. They’re going to send it to a third party collector in a few months. You pay the full pre-tax amount. Honestly, your best option is to have Northrop match your offer and stay. Moving to Raytheon/Lockheed isn’t really worth it. Get out of Aerospace and move into Tech.

Stay for 2-3 yrs

Stay and skill up. Forget defense. It’s not where the $ are at. I would know. Stuck here as a TPM (Chief Engineer). Doesn’t translate into tech well tbh. Barely getting through resume screens

Former RTX here. I went through the same process earlier this year and they DID make me pay it back, though there was a payment plan offer. I chose that option and negotiated a higher signing bonus to cover the costs. You do know you’re moving right into a company with stagnant raises stuck at 2ish%, right?

Thanks. I did get an offer from Amazon, with pay close to 200k which is higher but as a system development engineer, so still not the most perfect thing

You chasing dollars or a nice WLB? I’d be hard pressed to find any company with a nicer WLB than RTX. I couldn’t stand being treated as the token diversity employee in closed areas so I got the fuck out. It was so toxic

This seems old but my .02. 30 grand Is a good chunk to shell out but depends on if you can break into big tech. You have a masters in CS, I’m assuming you’re into software engineering. Get a job at any of the big tech companies and with 5yoe I’d expect you to land SDE II. If that’s the case you should be making 250k MIN. If you take a downlevel I would expect 180k MIN. If you do get into a big tech company, I’d just leave and pay the masters back. If you stick with defense, i might still say leave and pay it back. 2 years to pay 30, or 2 years to make 60 more total. If you want money and WLB, Amazon and meta won’t be the move, but there’s still plenty of other companies that will pay like above
