Merry Christmas! https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34125843
For some additional context, part of the issue is that Twitter REQUIRED users to link a real phone number for years. They also allowed you use to SMS for 2FA, so when hackers sim swap they can relatively easily steal accounts with this info. Imagine the havoc they could cause with some well timed tweets from government accounts. Additionally, this information effectively doxes the majority of twitter users. There are countless people who could be facing capital punishment based on this data in some countries. Other will have their lives flipped upside down.
It isn't the first time this was pointed out, either. There's several articles dating back years ago about the very same issues in smaller proportions surfacing previously.
Yeah, I vaguely remember the EU going after them for this requirement and they dropped it.
Plot twist, musk sold it
Well in his own words, “bills need to be paid!”
Nice, another big raise for infosec professionals
Guess what, Twitter rehires the laid off peeps.
Time to switch to more trustworthy platforms.
It’s so sad seeing people like you criticize Elon every step you can. While you’re being a whiny liberal hater he’s in the server room personally eliminating the hackers (likely antifa) and using the sudo command to de fragment the woke files. I bet you’re just coloring your hair blue today. Checkmate liberal. Merry Christmas (not holiday)
Literally crying and shaking rn
As a hardcore liberal, I just choked on my soy milk
This is written really odd. They try spinning it as a current event yet say Elon “may” be confronted by a breach. Then references a previous breach that was noticed in Nov. it’s just an update written in a click bait way. “Elon Musk may be confronted by a breach of this magnitude after he slammed Twitter's operations and rules. The DPC has already started looking into the previous breach that impacted more than 5.4 million users. In late November, the previous breach was discovered.”
The hacker news link I shared is just comments from random people. If you click the top of that page you can see the actual post from the hacker.
Ah, ok. when I searched for the story the India.com link was the only one, which is what I read from. Looks like there’s more activity as the story is spreading more. https://zeenews.india.com/technology/twitter-data-breach-hacker-posted-list-of-hacked-data-of-400-million-users-check-whether-your-data-is-leaked-or-not-2553637.html
What a sensible business proposal by a hacker!

How hard is it to get your first job at Google/Facebook?
Lmao. Merry Christmas to you too OP. Why is this news only in Indian sites?
I believe the story broke at 3am PST on Christmas morning so most American journalists won’t have had a chance to verify and release coverage.
Something similar broke out about 5M accounts getting hacked in end Nov 2022. Some said EM suspended the account who broke the news from Twitter. Not sure how reliable tho. Just read somewhere.
