Elon cut 90% of the staff and Twitter is still running. Where is the kaboom? I was promised an explosion. It just proves that the majority of people at Twitter did basically nothing and/or nothing impactful. It also means, you can run a top-10 website with far fewer SRE/SWE than expected.
Where did you get the 90% number from?
Thanks, Elon. He proved that 90% of people in Big Tech are unnecessary and can be canned.
Whataboutery. Anyway, GE is a screwed-up company for the same reasons as Big Tech.
Well yeah, most mature systems don’t need legions of people keeping them running. It’s just that progress stagnates and eventually it catches up to you, but over years not weeks.
It's amazing how much this needs to be repeated on Blind. Tech workers of all people should understand this.
@argoop free people get to write highly scalable and tested code. it's not common there are only a few that run their huge services at this level. Also with a few new abandoned services having no team members there are already a lot of exceptions and the top engineer on home has been here only for 5 years. although he is amazing, he has limitations.
It is really amazing that no major outage happened after cutting so many resources. But I can vouch for their AI/ML or whatever algo they run for feed is not working up to the mark. Which essentially leading to low engagement. I strongly feel Twitter's feeds are affecting user experience and with time it will become worse, if they do nothing about it.
Elon did not cut 90% of staff. There have been major outages both regionally and across specific features for notable durations. Also, companies are pulling their ads at an astonishing rate. But yeah, go Elon. 👏🏻
Not only is it still running, but they've shipped more new features in the past three months than in the previous three years. Just goes to show how much of the employee base at big tech is zero, if not negative, value add.
Spoken like a PM, “Twitter continues to be on the forefront of content and innovation. Just this past quarter we again revolutionized the world by increased the char limit. Visit us again next year when we change the blue checkmark’s color!”
Dude pls know the insight before you claim. All he did is to release all the ready to go code from past several weeks to months to get the credit.. inside twitter it’s chaos.. there are many teams without any reasource and they are broken. All remaining engineers just working for core services to keep the light on. So sorry that outside world has different picture
Twitter having outages
Great engineers build great products that would require very little maintenance. Does every company have great engineers. No. Will engineers continue to build well maintainable systems if companies will let them go the moment the product has matured? 🤔 Let's see.
Yes. They were needed 10 YEARS ago. The website doesn't need permanent designers and coders on payroll.
site with no incoming new features is a dead one, not a growth company small profits and valuation

BREAKING: Internal sources confirm another round of layoffs just hit emails at Tesla. For real.
Theyve had some regressions/downtimes, but not severe enough to lose business probably
Twitter hasn't had a visible outage yet.
Yeah, they did, just for specific parts of the application. I think at some point last week multiple people couldn’t send tweets. Then, at another point, no one could follow anyone else? It may not be the whole application, but it was surely visible and far from being mild.
