Hi all, I’m going on a business trip tomorrow. There’s a huge chance I’ll know tomorrow that my background check has gone through from Microsoft. I’ll be out on a business trip. I was to give a two weeks notice to my company and then take 1 week off between leaving and starting. So, I want to start in 3 weeks for Microsoft because they want me to start ASAP after my check goes through. Should I give my notice through the phone? I don’t know what to do here... help
Through slack then
Push back on MSFT. The recruiters will always ask you to start ASAP, but you should set that timeline, not them
Can they take back an offer if you push it back a week?
You should say that pushing back a week would be good for you to ensure a good relationship with your current employer. I think it would be hard for the recruiter to say no to that
Also depends on where you’re based. California is an “at will” state. You can walk off the job whenever. You’ll just burn bridges.
Why do you have to give notice in person btw?
I just thought all notices were supposed to be in person
If anything an email is an official notice
Yeah, I've had bosses thank me for telling them and then ask me to send them an email so it's in writing.
If you can’t help it then you can’t help it. Phone call with an email follow is adequate.
Appreciate it, thanks! :)
Push back on Microsoft. Especially, if you giving notice (entirely reasonable as you can’t be expected to burn bridges / your new team wouldn’t want you to do the same to them either) was also dependent on a variable such as a background check going through. As others mentioned the probability that they’d rescind the offer given the opportunity cost is incredibly low. And if they would pull that over you asking for a few extra weeks then you frankly dodged a bullet. As something would be seriously wrong with the hiring manager.
This is a good point, thank you
NOOOO! Take 2 weeks off inbetween - biggest learning of my career
I will try to do it!
You can be walked out. Do not take that risk. Get vacation between job instead.

Giving notice is better than not. In any form.
