I am considering a position at Uber. Can someone help me understand - a) what are the typical levels at Uber? Is there a senior manager position after engineering manager? What is the chain of promotions after engineering manager b) what is the typical experience for an engineering manager c) what is the base and yearly bonus and stocks for an engineering manager d) typical joining bonus or stocks e) typical working hours for managers Appreciate your responses in advance
Manager at Uber is a risky career.
One day at uber is like 3 months at oracle. Definitely ask to have a multiplier of 300 to your current comp
Don't manager at uber. We are seeing a Shelf life of 12-months.
6 months if you don't live in sfo :)
Why don't you just ask your HR contact?
HR usually tries to sell, doesn't give realistic answers.
There is nothing to sell here. And hide.
Guys at Uber, could u please help me out here? Probably with a more detailed answer to my questions in my post? Your experiences etc? About the comment comparing. Oracle to Uber, I appreciate the sentiment but don't go by stereotypes - what makes life worth living is that stereotypes are not often true. That's the complexity which makes things interesting. Oracle has 150k employees and spent billions acquiring every single competitor except SAP, and Sun, there must be engineers/managers doing something right. So while I get the banter and the sentiment, please help me with more facts/numbers. Need help to make some rational pragmatic decision.
there's EM 1 (equivalent of sr eng) then em 2, sr em, director, sr director. you're not managing managers until sr em level for the most part. everything else varies by team. try to talk to the director and they'll give you a pretty good idea of what's up. quality of sr managers varies but directors trend be pretty honest and straight forward if you ask.
What levels do you care about ? If you have more than 8 years experience and you have managed at least 3 years you will get an EM2 , uber doesn't hire EM1 . Forget about being a senior manager even if you were a director - uber doesn't hire any senior managers and only old timers are mostly sitting on that. So effectively you are left with EM2 which is a decent position . Also if you don't clearly understand what people are saying have fun and join :) god bless you .
e.g. Why you think it is risky? Btw senior manager wouldn't be a promotion for me. I want to know if there is a senior manager position at uber for engineering teams.
There is , but uber doesn't hire for those positions , it's internal promotion only - unless you are coming from google.
Working hours is 8am to 10 pm basically as long as your team is there you should be there , otherwise you will be fired .
Thank you everyone so much for your responses. Would you mind sharing the typical experience of a senior manager at uber and team size? I have 10+ years and have managed teams of size 20. What would be the typical comp for a senior manager?
Senior managers at uber typically have 30-50 reports. Your profile looks like a manager 2 at best.
Manager 2 for sure
Uber is a risky place to be, both for ICs and managers. There is not much upside anymore. Unless you are a political animal or sociopath, I don't recommend. I don't think they are going to give you Sr Manager. You will get Manager I or II and get promoted inside.
Manager I comp equals to Sr Eng Sr Manager band is more less Staff engineer
From oracle to Cisco? Really and asking for promo? #DareToStay1year
