For people who've visited India recently or have used their US/Canada credit cards on Indian websites recently, which of these cards work? I want to know about Uber, food delivery, restaurants, POS Tax: 240k, 2YOE
Apple
Apple card or apple pay?
Apple card
Almost everything works. India accepts digital payments at more locations than in the US. Just set a travel notice with your card provider and you should be good.
I'm certain this wasn't the case a few months back
It all depends on service providers not the bank. Visa and mastercard are accepted universally by all Indian merchants. Discover and Amex are not as common but you can still find some.
Amazon India and Flipkart didn't accept Mastercard or visa
I have used Amazon India with my US credit card.
Credit card worked when swiped / used physically. Credit cards did not work on online websites. There was some change in India where you can no longer use US credit cards for online shopping (Amazon, Flipkart etc) Cant order anything on amazon.in using any of my US cc Something to do with compliance and visa / mastercard not willing to comply with govt rules. I may be wrong but thats my understanding
Yes, this is what I'm talking about. Something happened without any official notice
Yup, Google pay (With us credit card) also won't work in India So make sure you transfer some money in India Bank and use that bank to Paytm or Upay etc for local payments or online payments I guess not everyone is aware of this issue until they face it
Chase/Amex/BoA all work in India specially for uber or restaurants. Just don't rely exclusively on Amex since some places won't take that. Need visa and Mastercard options as well
I didn't add them explicitly cos they're gateway and not the bank. Wasn't sure if they should be added
Just make sure you carry your phone with you. Banks will call you to verify if they see a large amount. Also carry your US Id as they will ask the merchant to check your id.
The issue here is the lack of Visa Secure support on US issued cards . It causes them to be rejected by online portals . The cards still work fine when used in person by the card owner . It is not restricted to India . The same cards will also fail for the same reason in other countries - eg Amazon Japan or Singapore. India is simply enforcing security policies on par with more advanced nations - the US is lagging here .
Mastercard failed on Amazon India
Neither V nor MC implement this in US . Amex does from what I recall .

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Only half of what you posted are actually service providers (ie, Chase is actually Visa). In my travels, a lot of places now take Apple Pay with a Visa card attached.
Thanks for this info. I know they barred US CCs a few months back, at least on Amazon India and Flipkart. Some friends said their cards were accepted or rejected unpredictably. Also, did you visit in the past year?
Yes, very recently
