US vs Europe (at-will vs probation)

Hi, Yelp has been firing people on probation, doing PIPs and also extending probations in Europe. It all looks like an attempt to push some targeted people out without actually doing outright layoffs. Yelpers in the US don’t understand this and just think the people being pushed out are underperformers but it seems like the probationary period is being misused by managers and in this case against employees. It is being used to push people to take less holidays and work harder to “prove themselves”. I understand our colleagues in the US find it hard to understand this because firing there happens “at-will” but what if a company is misusing the probationary period systematically to work to their advantage? Are there other companies out there who are venturing or already established in the European market and also using probationary period to pressure their employees to achieve certain goals/level? (Other than Amazon) What are differences you see in your company in terms of people being let go “at-will” or during a probation? #yelp #microsoft #google #bloomberg #brex #snap #meta #jpmorgan #doordash #amazon

Haven't seen this happen yet but I've been expecting it to happen.
