Uber Business Analyst vs Amazon BIE

I'm waiting for an offer from Amazon for an L5 BIE position based in Seattle. I'm currently in the the Bay Area in Analytics (non-data analyst) What are your thoughts on TC and career ladder growth? Current TC:~ 120k L3 Base- 92k annual Bonus - 10k annual Stock - 12k annual + 8k new hire YOE: 5yrs; 2yrs @Uber Offer TC: ~140k (waiting on offer) which seems low to me for an BIE title. Not sure if I am being under levelled as well. My current duties align with a potential move to the data eng org as I deal with data pipeline ETLs for my team. Debating on whether I should pursue Analytics career path or Data Eng Path and if it should be in Uber or Amazon.

I would not jump for 20k - that’s only 10k after taxes. Jump if you don’t like uber. Stay for future growth. Data engineering > analytics

I'm considering jumping since it's tough to move up internally. If I move to Amazon and then go back to Uber in 5 years, it'd probably get me a higher position and TC than if I went through the regular means.

Might be making the wrong assumption here but that's at least what I'm seeing. Tons of folks hired on my team a level higher than me with less YOE that I spend time having to train and help.

I'd say a good jump in TC considering you are going from Bay area to Seattle.

Uber jXxw22 OP Jun 12, 2020

Thanks, yeah, I'm thinking that as well since COL is down and low income tax. Concern is I won't be moving at least in 2020 so I won't be receiving the benefits of tax and CoL

Uber kfksjjdndk Jun 12, 2020

No state income tax. Not low. No. Go to Amazon

Uber shhhhhxx Jun 11, 2020

Same here. Got a Bie offer. As far as I know, the BIE role can also transfer to DE (which is a very popular path). I’m on OPT so stability matters more to me :)

Uber jXxw22 OP Jun 16, 2020

Hey shhhhhxx, Do you mind sharing what your offer was, they just got back to me with around 150k TC (120k Base, 29k sign off, 36 RSUs). I'm looking to negotiate upwards and I saw another post with around the same.

Expedia Group xvQx00 Jun 16, 2020

Hey, do you mind explaining how is that 150k? Are you dividing sign on over 4 years as well? I am just curious because I also got a verbal offer from Amazon for a BIE L5 so want to know the details.

Uber jXxw22 OP Jun 12, 2020

Great! Did you end up accepting? What was your offer and YOE if I may ask, I'm worried they might low-ball me given the current state of the market

PLAYSTUDIOS tomcat14 Jun 12, 2020

Hey OP, can I DM you for some tips? I am interviewing for BIE role. Already had DE reject last year so don’t wanna repeat mistakes. Thanks!!

PLAYSTUDIOS tomcat14 Jun 12, 2020

Also if it helps, I had saved this one for salary range

Uber Leet88 Jun 13, 2020

You are going to be working a lot more at Amazon and probably have more stress - but it’s much easier to move up in Amazon than Uber

Uber jXxw22 OP Jun 15, 2020

Yeah, I noticed. Moving up is hard, I love Uber but I really don't like playing the politics and having to keep fighting with HR in regards to job ladder and pay. Also been through 7 managers in 2 years with those that left near a promo cycle never leaving any feedback.

Microsoft blind072 Jun 23, 2020

Given the current volatility, I’d move.

Random question, what’s reasonable TC for Uber L4 BA in Bay Area?
