Uber L6 vs Microsoft L66 Manager

Hey Blind, I have an offer at Uber L6 to manage a team of 4 with the charter to grow the team in the coming months to around 6-7 while establishing processes for my discipline all up. Currently managing a team of 14 with 2 Senior Managers reporting to me at Microsoft L66. TC is 25% better at Uber with the risk of the stock going either way post-IPO. Would mean going from a much larger team to a smaller team, but with interesting challenges and in a completely different domain, culture, and work environment. Have any of you done something like this before? Any advice to offer?

M1 isn't L6 at Uber , it's L5A. Advice : don't join Uber

I should have been clearer. The level is L6 but I'm going to be the only manager for now of a flat organisation vs being a manager of managers at Microsoft.

Thanks for the advice. If you don't mind, can you also share why you think I shouldn't - will help to have another perspective.

Assuming engineering but if not, the following may not be accurate. L6 is Senior Manager at Uber which almost always means managing managers and orgs somewhat larger than 6-7. EM1 is equivalent to IC 5A (Senior Engineer) and generally not hired externally. At L66 at MSFT, it could also be an EM2 role (Uber L5B, equivalent to Senior Engineer 2). I've seen a variety of Microsoft managers come into Uber. Most work out well and adapt, but there definitely can be some culture shock at first especially around process and inconsistency of engineering practices/technology.

I've never heard of any engineer or engineering manager going back to Microsoft after Uber. Some product folks though. Join us!

Stay at MSFT. Uber's stock will not hold. And you're managing a much bigger team at MSFT. When do you see your next promotion coming? I bet it'll be sooner at MSFT than Uber... Also consider that.

Come to Uber. Huge plus side, lots of challenging work and high impact.

L66 mostly likely would map to L5b, if you got L6 offer, it is a greatly deal. However, L6 manager usually manage several teams with 25-40 total people. I would double check with recruiter about the level. What is your current TC and offer?

This is definitely a level up from L66. Which office - SF or Seattle?
