I am an L4 PM at Google who will get to L5 by the end of the year (yes there is uncertainty but it’s just a matter of time because a launch is imminent). My compensation is pretty high for my level (TC: $450k this year) thanks to an additional stock grant. My manager and team are very happy with my work and I kind of enjoy it too. I am close to getting an offer from Uber for a lead product manager role. 1) Is this move worth it considering everything? 2) What comp should I expect for lead pm at Uber? Anything else I should consider? #pm #product #productmanager #uber #google
Uber lead PM is a 5b. Easy to get a few reports and move to L6 pretty quickly which is a GPM. I’d say the work will be more fast paced than Google, and managing stakeholders can sometimes get on your nerves. But totally worth it if you’re looking for a challenge.
Definitely go to Uber as 5b. That's essentially L6 and you can easily become a manager. TC is 500k-600k
This, your TC is temporarily high and you're two uncertain promos away from getting at Google what Uber is offering. Plus you'll learn and grow new skills.
5B is a L6 at Google. Do it
How did you get an additional stock grant?
What do you value in life? Let's start there. 5B comp will likely be around 500K tops, but def higher scope than L4/L5 at G. This estimate is based on current market. Equity growth, from here on out, I'd think it's about a wash with less risk on G overall due to how well it's diversified. You missed a huge run up with Uber. If you value career growth above all (and want to be challenged), go with Uber. Do make sure it's a good org - happy to help weigh in here. If you value other things such as stability, WLB - then maybe staying at G is the right move. Uber pros: -Higher scope & title and better for career trajectory -Likely higher comp G pros: -You enjoy your current work, you like your team and they like you. This is a HUGE plus -Promo coming (though I suspect this won't be a huge pay bump, but may get you closer to the 500k) -More stable
At Uber your manager and team visibility determine your career path for PMs (not even the actual impact of projects you ship- yes it’s that political). You can be a top performer but have a bad manager and your career will be capped. I’d make sure you interview with peers and check the manager and team is high vis.
How would you ask peers about this? Directly or indirectly?
first get the offer, second get the promotion, then you are in a position to compare options. A lot of things could happen between now and end of the year, especially given this economy
I always wonder what's the point of these kind of comments. There is uncertainty everywhere, you could have two offers and die on the way to work tomorrow; does that mean you should never think ahead at all?
If you like your boss and are in a good position it’s prob not a mistake to stay at G in this environment. If you know the team very well at uber maybe could be worth it
You're at the TC level where it should now depend on what you want. What are you prioritizing? Do you want to explore? Do you have a family or obligations that you prefer your schedule to be kept stable at? Etc etc
Also congrats! It's a big accomplishment either decision
