Seems like I got lowballed for a L5, what do you all think? I hear there is a L5b at Uber? How do I negotiate? I have some pre-ipo onsites in the next couple of weeks. Background - PhD + 3. Yes. I hate the MLS/MLE job. I hated it at Amazon and even more at eBay. People working so hard to improve some precision value, some CTR, or some nonsense metric by 0.1% and then pushing that into a sub standard product sold by sub standard marketing people. Even the best models will get diluted by a river of incompetent product builders and sellers. I also figured out that I like the part of ideating and selling cool products more than building it. With my knowledge of ML, Experimentation, and Causal Identification, I think I can be a solid product manager. Also, ML will shift wildly over the next decade or so. It makes more sense to me to learn how to monetize this shit more than the implement the latest model.
But product ds will be the priorities to be axed while things getting worse?
Please understand that in the majority of tech companies product DS is paid less than eng or ML-focused DS. Just so you know.
Is the Uber position data scientist or applied scientist? Just wanna make sure as they’re subtly different
Is 300k first year's TC with front loading or average across 4y with our refreshers? If it is latter then the first year TC will indeed be around 350k. With refreshers and decent performance it won't fall under 350k either
L5a is senior, l5b is staff. Phd + 3 mostly map to senior unless you are already at staff equivalent role in eBay. You can check levels.fyi
I was L6 at Amazon before eBay. eBay was a job I took after getting laidoff. L6 at Amazon spans over L5a and b it seems
Don't buy into this stupidity. Uber L5b used to be just senior 2 and L6 was staff. Ther performance of people were pretty much that. Just because they change the title, seniors are not going to become staff overnight lol. Don't ever accept L5a from Amazon L6. It's straight up downlevel even if u were just promoted to L6 at amazon
