I was reading the engineering blog of uber https://eng.uber.com/ and came across many interesting articles. Looks like the kind of problems being worked on at Uber are of a great variety, requiring scalability and reliability considerations to create solutions. Overall I quite liked the articles, which makes me wonder about the engineering culture at Uber. With so many interesting problems to work on and such great variety of solutions being employed, the engg culture would be expected to be exciting, positive and forward looking, no? Then why is uber culture and work have such low ratings?#uber #culture

Marketing and reality are 2 different things!
At Uber we have some amazing difficult engineering challenges to tackle. Some of them would blow your mind. I’m loving what I’m working on!
Layoffs and losing to DD in Eats.
Pretty awesome I’d say. Impact driven and we never short of interesting problems to solve. Routing, Scaling, Optimization, large scale machine learning, meta learning etc
Great to hear. What would you say that could be better at Uber?
The bad is usually not technical, except maybe the endless migrations for someone’s promo.
It’s funny how some people who still works at Uber are like cry babies here. It’s like being on a team but not believing in it, why don’t you leave. I know lots of people who are working to push the company forward, you are the bad energy the company doesn’t need.
Can someone from Uber explain clearly what is particularly bad at Uber nowadays when the technical work is good/great?
Uncertainty around leadership’s ability to do the right long term thing instead of short term M&A to please investors. It could change in both directions and need more time to tell if leadership is balancing between short/long term or just want to collect their bonus.
^is it fair to say that engineers at Uber don't yet trust the leadership/management to be doing the right things for the long run? i.e. you aren't sure if the company is setting itself up well for a stable long term profit making business.

Engineering blogs are similar to trailers of a movie. Even a bad movie has a great trailer. Not saying that there aren’t engineering challenges at Uber, there defintely are but dont trust the blog, just look at Airbnbs blog and you will think their technical difficulty is even more than Google Search.
It is wierd that some people like OP take these things at face value. Coz internet never lies!
How do you know what problems we work on. Go back to pushing paper.
