Finished on-site with Uber for a L5 position, recruiter said feedback was positive but HM wants to schedule a follow up Feels like a convo to discuss downlevel? Chances of convincing otherwise or is it set post debrief? TC: 300
How was your interview? How many system design rounds?
Interview had mixed performance. 2 coding, 2 system design
5a or 5b?
Is it for EM or SWE?
SWE
leveling is set post debrief, but the call isn't necessarily a down level call
I see, do these calls often happen? Not sure what to expect in this call since no official offer has been made yet but no rejection either
It’s not uncommon - basically means you were a soft yes and there’s either one interviewer and / or consensus on a follow up area. Every time I’ve seen a follow up, it results in an offer. Extremely unlikely they would down level, we’re desperate to bring people in right now. The questions will be centered on whatever you as flagged to explore in more detail with you, so hard to guess what questions will be unless you got a sense from interviewers of an area they seemed fixated on. I interviewed a candidate a few months ago my team loved. One interviewer who wasn’t on our team felt like the candidate didn’t express enough experience in A. They triggered a follow up and the candidate is now on our team and killing it. Good luck!
Thanks for the detailed write up! The only context I got for this meeting from the recruiter is that it would be discussing the role / team / growth and didn’t seem like it was probing for more data points. Wasn’t sure if it was a setup for a sell call to take a downlevel or about the different available teams within the org I was interviewing for. One thing to note is that I did apply for 5b and they downleveled me to a 5a loop
I really wouldn’t consider it a down level with 5a from 5b unless you really want to manage people (think that was why we created the distinction or that’s what we say in my org). An L5 is an L5. The HM wouldn’t be circle back unless it’s a soft yes and they just want to close some things out. It’s honestly more of a stupid process issue. We claim we need to hire urgently, interview a bunch of good people, and then add complexity where it’s not needed like this. Should be behavioral and imagine the HM is just checking a box here. We are very consensus driven. You need 10 people to agree on every silly little detail.
I had a Zoom team interview over two weeks ago. Recruiter has contacted me twice via email saying that the team connect has to be rescheduled to earlier this week due to people being out and I’d receive and update. I haven’t heard anything else yet. This was in the legal department though.
HM convo is usually to probe your motivation, personality and/or deep dive into your past experience.
