Hey'all. I talked with one of the Uber Hiring Manager last week for possible L3 data science position. Hiring manager was cool, they said next steps will be on-site interview. But next day I received this take home assignment from recruiter and I asked WHY? :) And If I do this 3 pages long homework, will I shorten the process? They said exactly this: "We give this exercise to candidates when the hiring manager has some doubts but still see lots of potential. Hiring manager is in doubt of your xp experience but she also thinks it is nice to see how they do with some time on exercise vs on the spot in an interview & we could shorten panel since we've done exercise." Lol I don't know how to respond to this or is this some kind of joke. If you have doubt on myself why you still not rejecting me? Are they that much desperate to find candidates? #datascience #uber YOE: 3 (1.5 year DS consultancy + rest is non DS role in Google but kept working with DS teams with different projects) TC: 🥜
You can counter and say: “I am glad to hear that the hiring manager has common sense and determined that it is not possible to assess a person based on a short one page resume and look forward to demonstrating my skills and knowledge from experience I gathered in my current and previous roles. I am available on <date(s)> between <time> and <time>. Let me know which one works best for you. I have no food restrictions in case you plan a lunch break during the interview process. Best, Guy/Girl who fucks! “
I loved this. Might use it xD
Same crap when I was interviewing at Postmates (acquired by Uber). Total waste of fucking time and they ghosted me afterwards. Tell them to suck it
That sucks, lol. A take home assignment sounds like they are borderline on you, and need to be convinced on your tech ability.
So it's not worth for the time right? I can't change their mind with one single task. Lol the position is even entry position, L3! XD
Also if they see me as borderline, why not just directly rejecting me? So weird man, so weird..
Which org and team is it for?
Payments
They got rid of this in CAS a while ago
Do it if you actually care to get an offer. In reality, someone who interviewers aren’t certain about and need further ‘testing’ to decide on them rank low overall. Basically, if your work or your interview performance is not clearly giving signal for a Yes, then it’s a Probably Not.
I didn't even get any interview yet. I just talked with HM last week and they said next step will be on-site before we dropped the call. Next day I got this "homework" news. Like a joke.
Agree it’s poor taste to say “low confidence” to candidates during a hiring pipeline
Maybe this isn't typical for data/SW roles, but as a PM I get asked to create presentations based on a prompt for almost every interview.
Same as a designer
They’ll ghost you after don’t do it
Same happened with Wayfair for me. You put in so much effort and they don't even have the courtesy to get back.
Expedia did this to me just last month. Atleast send a rejection email with some fucking feedback.
Take home assessments are bullshit I immediately withdraw applications if they're a part of the process
Agreed
Hones question: Why? A take home assessment would better showcase your skills than a couple of random leetcode problems?
Well on the bright side you can boast that “you” rejected Uber by refusing to do the assignment.
Lol that's exactly what I'm thinking to do. I'll write, well then hopefully you would find candidates that you don't have any doubt :)
Hahaha do it @google
