I mean it sucks for everyone, but more so for hard working employees on H1B. Since they were not given any runway, they have less than 60 days to prep, find a job, get the legal transfer processes done AND start working... or go back to their home countries. They should have at least kept them on payroll for a month or two to give them more time to find a job. edit: it is pointed out to me that there is no runway generally during a layoff.
To be honest, everyone knows Uber's culture from the beginning.
đ¨ So no buffer time? Just instant firing and packing?
That's what I heard, yes. Officially unemployed since yesterday.
Wow that's brutal!
Uber is a business, not a charity. Employees always fall into the trap of thinking their employers actually care about anything other than making a profit from their work.
Ah, the non sense they feed you at Amazon. I agree they don't have to do anything legally, but it's a very common practice to give a few months of heads-up AND some runway time. Even Amazon does this. That's exactly why I said they're dicks to do this.
You don't have to be a "dick" running your profitable company. I know Amazon mentality is different.
Companies donât do this. Theyâre not going to wait around for you to fuck up their systems or steal their IP knowing youâll be terminated on date X. Every place I know of does the instant layoff and walkout.
Heard of PIP? I know LinkedIn warns folks in advance too. You should check.
PIP isnât the same! PIP = you fâd up Layoffs = the company fâd up
It is public knowledge that uber loses over a billion dollars every month. Everyone knew this...
If my understanding is correct, Twitter did the same thing back in 2016. Though I didn't ask for the detail, some of my friends needed to go back to their home countries (of course some of them had a family).
Likely due to California Warn act, you maybe walked out the bldg , but you get 60days notice/ paid employment plus whatever extra severance the company chooses to give you.
This. They got 60 days WARN act. Still on payroll for 60 days
Thanks! I hope that's true. I'll inform the few I know who were told they have 60 days to find a job by their lawyers starting yesterday.
OP could have stopped after the third word.
You think Uber hires mediocre engineers?
I read on a post they were given reverence and also kept on payroll? If not that really blows
Severance = đ°. But if they donât keep the employment the visa crisis is there
Severance is obvious. It takes like 2 weeks at the minimum just to get an H1B transfer receipt only after which a new employer can initiate on boarding. USCIS can take longer and don't have to give a shit. They literally have less than 6 weeks to do everything a job search process needs.
