Why not try PMM? Director is a huge leap up from where you are at

Which target companies? That’d make a huge difference

It comes down to where you worked in relation to where you are applying If you’re applying to faang and your ten years of PM do not include staff/product lead work at say google, you’re going to have a bad time.

I disagree, it is also about what you did. Being at FAANG doesn’t simply make you worthy of a senior title until you actually had a much bigger scope or impact. I have had so many candidates from FB trying to fake L6 and L7 level to get Group product manager or Director titles outside when the work they were doing was of a senior PM level. Some companies and hiring managers buy this BS and that’s how they end up hiring people managers who have no people management skills but just came from FAANGs.

What I meant was that your big scope is heavily discounted at faang and unicorns if you did not have that experience at faang or unicorns

Wow, 17 YOE and you're having a hard time making Director.... When it comes to big tech companies, you meet the YOE bar, but they like to see variety. Did you do all ur PM at one company or multiple companies (were they F500 or startup or both)? For FAANG A technical Director at my company would get down leveled to L6 at higher TC (on average) with only a few get L7 A technical VP could get down leveled to L8 (we had a former CTO get downleveled to Director) So it all depends on where you apply bc not every company maps their level to the other
