In California, 32k a year for Payroll Admin. and Accounts Payable. 11 Years with company. 100 Employees. Lowest paid in entire clerical office of 7 others averaging 80k-120k. Time to look for other job? No degree but have worked my way up with the company and have taken on responsibilities that deserve a livable wage. Love the company but I’m almost 30, the paycheck to paycheck isn’t cutting it. I just don’t get how I’m capable of fullfilling the needs of the company, but because I don’t have the degree I’m not deserving of a reasonable wage? Even 45k I would be satisfied. Considering leaving for a more flexible even less paying job in Retail to go back to school. #career #finance #payroll #accountspayable
Ask for a raise? If they don’t oblige then leave
Best strategy for asking for a raise?
Find another job and then negotiate with your current employer. Though, you should be ready to leave the table if their offer is not good enough.
Don’t afraid to take more responsibility and don’t afraid to ask for more.. think both sided. Make the difference btw you and others. I’m high school graduate, I make $140k a year as sales manager in NYC.
Do you also have to sell or strictly manage your team?
Good point. I still have big commercial accounts that need to take care of..
I was in the same boat. Worked my way from $12/hr to finally capping out at $47k as a Sr Ops Analyst. I kept getting overlooked for roles at that company and was paid far less than my counterparts. Finally decided to jump ship and was offered $80k plus an 8% annual bonus and a manager title. I learned that my fear of having to start my solid reputation over at a new place was holding me back. Best way to get more money is to join a new company.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated.
Find a company that's willing to pay your worth. I'm assuming your job responsibilities are worth more. Also just get the degree. It's superficial but it will remove so many barriers.
Thanks for responding.
You worked there 11 years, upgrade your stills. These are crazy times but try and look for something better
Apply to somewhere else if you feel underpaid. if that place is the only option then you're not underpaid.
this is not really the best time to move. Hiring is pretty slow in most places. You need to focus on building some skills to improve your long term prospects. I like your idea of going back to school. All the best!

Payroll isn't the highest paying role, but that is still low. Here's some government stats https://www.bls.gov/oes/2019/may/oes433051.htm The best way to figure out how much you can earn is to interview elsewhere
WTFH ?? I think there is more issues than just not having degrees with you .. My last crappy work @ NorCal was run mostly by no degree holders and product was left and right . So I once had a talk with mgmt and the response was look @that dude who created this, he don’t have to had a degree to create this ?? That’s the point I realize I am heading my head in the brick wall

Is meta really worth the wait?
32k is very low, but without a college degree, it will be hard to advance. Work on getting one if you can, doesn’t need to be a top school.
Thanks, appreciate the feedback.
