In the last 2 months I saw two families getting impacted dramatically badly due to the H1b visa situation. Situation # 1 One of friends (based in the bay area) moved to Coinbase from Google about 9 months ago for 30% hike in salary. He got laid off in June and couldn't find a job or another visa (explored B1 visa and F1 visa both but did not want to pursue as you can't generate income whole you are on such visa class) in 60 days. He and his family (one kid - 6 yr old) left for India permanently. Now he is struggling to find a job as India's job market is hit badly in the tech sector. He is repenting everyday for leaving Google for Coinbase. He also sold his townhouse in Mountain View in a rush and got severely low-balled as the housing economy is crashing. Situation # 2 A common connection moved to Peloton from Apple almost a year ago for a Director level role. He was based in the bay area too. His entire team was wiped out in the first wave of layoff. Similar situation to the Coinbase guy above, he couldn't find anything and sold his house in San Ramon and moved to his hometown in India. Now is regretting big time for leaving Apple. Surprisingly Apple is not entertaining him for a boomerang opportunity. He has two kids, 12 and 10. Both kids are seeing impact on their academics and apparently it has pushed this guy into depression. I am not saying don't leave your jobs to pursue something better but be very cautious when you are thinking of joining high flying companies such as Peloton, Coinbase, Robinhood, Zoom, Pinterest and later you find out the valuation and the real business was more or less pump n dump scheme. It's not worth making $150k extra before taxes at the cost of your health and well being of your own family. #layoff #h1b

Hypocrisy of Indians
It’s not h1b it’s greed. People don’t think long. Everyone wants to be rich immediately. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Why to repent on it?
Not necessarily. Sometimes it's ambition too.
Let’s not get confuse. Ambition ties to becoming something.. financial aspect is secondary. If financial uplifting is the primary criteria then it’s not ambition. It’s a greed my friend.
Greed is one of the seven deadly sins.
USA wasn't built without greed USA can leave all it's oil bases if it wants
It’s not greed. If you have the choice to get $1 or $1.5 for the same work, it’s difficult to rationalize keep doing that work for $1.
Your outlook is completely wrong. Laying off / firing H-1 or L-1 will never happen. Has never happened as far as I can remember since 1991 at all 11 companies I worked for at GOOG, AMZN, MSFT, YHOO, ORCL, CSCO, JDSU, CTXS, JNPR, AMAT in BA. For 1 simple reason. It cost employers up to $100k to remove H/L employees belongings & selves by flight or months of hotel stay if it’s by ship, to their home country if these employees were terminated / retrenched or URA/PIP fail
Are you living under a rock?
Troll !
It is part of the game. Life never ends just because you have to leave from USA
They don’t even have to leave the US. Just stay here and Biden will save them
Sounds fake. If they were here for a while, their i485 should have been filed by now and that will let them stay here for longer time than the 60 day mandate for H1b. Not saying these kind of situations don’t happen. But the examples you provided - especially the director one - sounds fake.
Both of them had priority dates of 2015-2016.
do you know how long i-485 can take for the overrepresented countries? I-140 sure but that still only allows 60 days. I-485 can be over a decade or even decades
Sad truth. Desis tend to typically care only about money. WLB jaye bhad mein is the mentally of many desis. Obsession with high TC can be seen everywhere - office, blind, matrimonial apps. Your friends had to go back back as they prioritized $$$ over WLB and job stability. Their families are suffering now because of their greed. I feel bad for your friend’s kids. It’s incredibly hard for 10 year and 12 year US raised kids to adjust to a new life in India.
TL;DR Dude , Take a chill pill
Common who doesn't want money? Who knows this is gonna happen? Who said there wouldn't be layoffs at Google? He thought it would be best for him and he did it. If someone is afraid of something bad gonna happen, no one can do anything.
Minus the 60 days, true for anybody. Costs etc can make you bankrupt. Thats why your network and support system matters, which you risk while leaving your home country.
H1B visa holders are always hand tied in changing jobs, always under the axe of getting fired, cannot speak out against their Superiors when being exploited or discriminated against cause that would lead to again getting fired and as a result losing the entire livelihood. I hope people who are blaming the visa holders understand this. It just takes one word against your boss to lose your life. Also recruiters don't consider hiring engineers if you are on last year of your OPT. So yeah one should digest that too. The immigration system is messed up as anything.
Another wrong thinking. LCA amendment is a 2 days job for job change
It’s true upto certain extent.
Both sound made up. The job market wasn't bad when those layoffs happened. And if they were swe it wouldn't have taken then too long to get a new job. With most layoffs you get 4 months to look for a new job.
But I think h1b visa has 30 days requirement otherwise they have to go back I think
Also why would they make up the story
What is an H1b Visa?
Speciality occupation visa (work visa)
Oh ok
